Up, up and away: Mad Men star John Slattery enjoys an action-packed break in St Barts as he goes kitesurfing

He's famous for playing heavy-drinking, ladies man Roger Sterling in Mad Men.

However, when it comes to holidaying, John Slattery couldn't be further from Roger's unhealthy lifestyle as he enjoyed an action-packed break in St Barts.

The actor, 53, was spotted kitesurfing in the warm Caribbean Sea on Sunday as he vacationed in the West Indies.

John watched an instructor go through the motions before jumping on the board himself and sailing across the waves.

His holiday came as it was announced on Monday that John has been cast in the New York theatre revival of The Front Page.

The actor will join Nathan Lane, John Goodman, Rosemary Harris, Jefferson Mays and Sherie Rene Scott in the drama about tabloid newspaper reporters.

John will play reporter Hildy Johnson, while Nathan takes on the role of editor Walker Burns in the revival of the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's 1928 play, which is due to open in October.

Following the end of Mad Men last year, John has joined the cast of comedy series Veep as the love interest of the Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character Selina Meyer.

John's character will be seen in the upcoming fifth series of the HBO show, which starts in the US next month.

Meanwhile, the actor admitted he finds it funny he is regarded as a sex symbol following his portrayal of womanising ad man Roger in 1960s drama Mad Men.

He told People magazine: 'It's nuts. I don't think that anybody who is thought of in any way, shape or form as that is comfortable with it.'
