Real Madrid have never won a Champions League semi-final having lost the first leg... in seven previous attempts

Real Madrid will have to do something they have never done before in their glittering history if they are to reach this year's Champions League final.

After losing 2-1 to Juventus in Turin on Tuesday night the competition's holders must overturn a first-leg deficit next week at the Santiago Bernabeu.

In seven previous attempts, Real have never before won a Champions League or European Cup semi-final having lost the first leg.

Four of those defeats have come since the European Cup was reborn as the Champions League in 1992, with the most recent against Borussia Dortmund two years ago.

Madrid, then managed by Jose Mourinho, never recovered from a 4-1 first-leg drubbing in Germany - winning only 2-0 in the Spanish capital.

That tie was the last in a run of three consecutive semi-final defeats Real suffered having lost the first leg, losing to Bayern Munich on penalties in 2012 and 3-1 on aggregate to Barcelona in 2011.

Bayern were also victors in 1987 and 2001, going on to win the Champions League in the latter year, as Barca did after beating Real in 2011.

In 1973, Ajax went on to win the European Cup having seen off Real over two legs, winning the first in Amsterdam 1-0.

And Manchester United's first European Cup triumph, way back in 1968, came after they had beaten Real Madrid 4-3 over two legs, winning the first at Old Trafford 1-0.

This is the 26th European Cup semi-final Real Madrid have competed in and they have won the tournament 10 times.
