Beyond Formal Majors
Choosing an Area of Emphasis puts the power in your hands.
At Evergreen, you create your own course of study from offerings in more than 60 subjects. Over your time here, you'll develop a pathway that meets your goals and interests. You can connect your studies together into an area of emphasis.
You don‘t have to take any specific prerequisites to complete your bachelor’s degree. Advisors and faculty help you figure out what to take to meet your graduate school or professional goals.
You will also reflect on your development annually through an evolving Academic Statement.
Beyond Disconnected Classes
Programs focus multiple subjects around a common theme, instead of teaching disconnected subjects.
Interdisciplinary programs reflect the real world.
Most Evergreen classes, called programs, cover more than just one subject. Full-time programs combine subjects taught by several faculty from different fields. A program connects these fields with an overarching theme, reflecting the interconnectedness of the real world.
As an upper-level student, you can create your own program with an individual learning contract. You'll set your own goals and develop your syllabus with the help of a faculty sponsor.
You may also have the opportunity to do research or internships. In addition, focused courses (2-6 credits) are available to complement your course of study.
With one-on-one meetings, you can build a rapport with your faculty.
Beyond Letter Grades
Narrative evaluations are more meaningful.
Narrative evaluations help you make sense of what you‘ve learned. Your faculty will give you more than just a single letter grade. They‘ll take the time to write about what you did well and how you can improve. You‘ll meet with them to discuss your experience before they add it to your transcript.
You can also write a self-evaluation at the end of each program. This process gives you a chance to reflect on what you‘ve learned.
The thoroughness of this noncompetitive approach is valuable to many graduate schools and employers. Your individual achievements and strengths will stand out.
