'I don't know any perfect women': Melissa McCarthy slams 'bulls**t' Hollywood standards and says her weight will always be 'up and down'

The 45-year-old is a size 14, and told Refinery29 she has to remind herself that what the industry considers 'normal' is completely unrealistic.

'I know I am not the “norm”,' she said. 'I don't know any perfect women.

'What people pass off as “normal,” I just have to keep in my head that it's bulls**t. It’s all fictitious, made-up stuff.'

Melissa added: 'I know some of those women in those magazines who get called perfect or whose butt is supposedly better, and often they don’t even look like that in person.'

The actress, who is currently promoting her latest film The Boss, recently lost 50lbs.

But she says she's OK with her weight fluctuating a bit, and is disappointed when people are more interested in her size than other aspects of her life and work.

'I'll be up, I'll be down, probably for the rest of my life,' she told Refinery29. 'The thing is, if that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this [acting] up.

'There has to be something more. There are so many more intriguing things about women than their butt or their this or their that.'

Melissa launched her plus-size clothing line in August 2015 on Home Shopping Network, and is now available in stores such as Macy's and Nordstrom as well as her website

Despite the success of the brand, the Bridesmaids star admits it can be an uphill battle trying to get plus-size items to be sold in areas of department stores that aren't 'segregated'.

'I think every time I take a baby step, someone says, “We've done incredible polling with [plus-size] women, and they actually love the convenience of going upstairs to shop in their own department,”' she confessed.

'And I'm like, “Really? They like being segregated? … Do they want to be by the tires or do they want to shop with their friends?” I know I'd like to go shopping with my friends.'

Melissa's latest movie sees her play wealthy mogul Michelle Darnell, who must rely on her former assistant when she is left broke after a stint in federal prison for insider trading.

Michelle decides to launch a Girl Scout Cookie empire in the comedy, which is directed by Melissa's husband Ben Falcone and hits cinemas on April 8.
