The 30-year-old and pro partner Artem Chigvintsev's tango to The Weeknd's In The Night on opening night failed to impress the judges, with head of the table Len Goodman accusing her of merely walking around the floor.

And on Monday night their follow up cha-cha-cha didn't fare much better, with the off-rhythm effort garnering paltry fives across the board.

According to her friend, Barton 'didn't really have any sort of deep desire to learn to dance, and she hadn't really watched the show before she was cast,' which has made participation all the more challenging.

During her video segment, Mischa and Artem certainly seemed to be misfiring in the rehearsal studio, as she appeared to be in a Marissa Cooper-style teenage huff.

As she struggled to hold back tears during the judges criticism, Mischa even told host Tom Bergeron that she couldn't hear the song very well.

It was an unfortunately timed excuse, as immediately afterward deaf model Nyle DiMarco tangoed out and outscoring her by seven points.

However another friend of Barton's told People that her apparent disinterest may be being misread.

'Mischa has never really been high-energy,' the said. 'She's introverted and quiet. She's very much like her OC character. She could be having the best time, but her demeanor doesn't really change.'

Speaking to US Weekly after Monday's show, Barton claimed neither partner was feeling well.

'We both got sick since last week which wasn't great, so on antibiotics, trying to get through the dance, through our cha cha and stay positive … You have five days to learn it and get through it, and when you're not feeling 100 percent from the last dance, [it's tough],' she said.

Nevertheless, it was 72-year-old talk show host Geraldo Rivera who was sent packing on the night, his Donald Trump themed salsa deemed even worse than Mischa's.

Despite being the clear favourite to walk next week, she insisted she would be in a better place for week three.

'I think we'll probably get back to a better place now,' she said, hopefully. 'I just feel like this whole week just psyched me out, and maybe now it's time to just attack it with positivity.'

Mischa famously had a breakdown in 2009, which involved her being committed to a psychiatric ward, when a psychiatrist invoked California's 5150 code, which allows a clinician involuntarily confine someone they believe to be d danger to themselves or others.
