Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger wears knee brace while watching girlfriend Ana Ivanovic play

Bastian Schweinsteiger was spotted wearing a knee brace while supporting girlfriend Ana Ivanovic in Miami with the Manchester United midfielder facing a fight for fitness before the season ends.

The 31-year-old suffered a similar knee injury to the one that kept him out for eight weeks earlier in the year and the Germany captain missed their defeat by England in Berlin on Saturday night.

Instead he travelled to the USA to watch Ivanovic, who was beaten 7-5, 6-4 by Timea Bacsinszky in the third round at the Miami Open.

Manchester United midfielder Schweinsteiger could be out for the rest of the season with his injury

Schweinsteiger was flown to Munich in the last week for an MRI scan with national team physician Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt and the results showed a small tear.

He had only just returned to Louis van Gaal's squad after suffering an injury in an FA Cup tie against Sheffield United in January. 

It was confirmed this week that Schweinsteiger had returned to the sidelines after a 'partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee' and that he would not play in Germany's friendlies.

‘It’s the medial ligament again,’ confirmed German coach Joachim Low.

‘I am not able to give an exact time scale as to how long he will be out, but it doesn’t look very positive. It happened at the end of the training session and he’s in Munich being examined.’

Schweinsteiger is expected to miss the rest of the Barclays Premier League season while his involvement at Euro 2016 this summer is also in doubt.
