Jonny Wilkinson will not join England's coaching staff in Australia as Eddie Jones continues hands-on role running the attack

  • Eddie Jones was keen on recruiting Jonny Wilkinson as a kicking guru
  • But Wilkinson will not coach with England on the tour of Australia in June
  • The iconic ex-No 10 is contracted to undertake broadcast work at home
  • Jones will continue to personally oversee his attack prior for the Wallabies

Jonny Wilkinson will not be part of England's coaching staff for the tour of Australia in June — and Eddie Jones will continue to personally oversee the team's attacking game.

In the aftermath of the recent Grand Slam success, Jones had expressed an interest in extending the World Cup-winner's involvement as a kicking guru.

But the iconic former No 10 is contracted to undertake broadcast work at home during the tour and Sportsmail has learned there is 'no hope' of that arrangement being amended or cancelled.

Following the Six Nations campaign, Jones had also suggested that he would add a backs coach to his management team just for the three-Test series against his home country.

However, it is understood that the plans have been amended and that Jones will maintain his hands-on role running the attack for the matches with the Wallabies in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

But there is likely to be further pre-tour recruitment, in the form of a full-time scrum coach.

While the senior England squad are Down Under, the Saxons are heading to South Africa for two matches against the Emerging Springboks.

There had been speculation that Rob Baxter, the Exeter head coach, would manage that vital development trip, but despite an initial approach he has not been asked to take part.

Instead, the indications are that Jon Callard — who has held various coaching roles within the RFU for several years — will be in charge of the Saxons, assisted by Exeter backs coach Ali Hepher.

Hepher is highly regarded by Jones and the South Africa trip may serve as a trial, with the prospect of a future position on the senior coaching staff.
