Can't be tamed? Miley Cyrus might think her new bangs are 'weird', but don't let that stop you from having a chop - just use FEMAIL's pro tricks for styling and loving your fringe

  • The singer took to Instagram to share her frustrations with the blunt style

There is perhaps no hairstyle both as tempting and terrifying as bangs. On the one hand: What better way to refresh your image at the start of a new season or life chapter like freshly cut fringe? On the other hand: What about frizz? Or static or wind? Or worst of all, the growing out process?

It seems that Miley Cyrus, who debuted bangs last weekend, wishes she had thought of the latter before taking the plunge.

In a picture posted on Instagram yesterday with her new 'do clipped back away from her face, the 23-year-old wrote, 'When you feel weird about yo new bangzzzzzzz ...... Practicing non attachment! Everything is constantly coming and goin! Lessons always to be learned even thruuuuu dumbbbb $hit that seems like it's meaningless ! Hair cuts can be life changers and eye openers!'

BEFORE YOU GO TO THE SALON

If you're considering getting bangs, it's important to first take into consideration the texture of your hair.

'Curly hair and bangs are not usually a match,' says Marcus. 'It's not that they won't look good, it's just a lot of work.' Same goes for cowlicks.

'A professional stylist can work with a cowlick, but as soon as you're in your own bathroom, you'll find it's really hard to deal with.'

According to Marcus, you should also consider your surrounding environment. If you live in a humid climate and your hair is frizz-prone, for example, bangs might not be the best choice.

Your daily schedule is another deciding factor. Expect to spend an extra five to ten minutes styling them in the mornings. 'I love bangs,' says Marcus, 'but they really do require time.'

Finally, assess the size of your forehead and your hairline. 'If your hairline is low, or your forehead is small, bangs may close in on the face.'

For a softer style that's not as high maintenance as blunt, straight across bangs a la Miley, Marcus recommends considering a cut that has length at the sides.

'This way the bangs are more like a layer, and you can either blend them into your hair or blow them forward - there's more flexibility.'

For a commitment-free option, try clip-ins. To be sure that the piece blends seamlessly into your own hair, 'don't match the color to your ends like you would with regular extensions,' says Marcus. 'Instead, match to your root color or the hair around the temple and eye area.'

STYLING AT HOME

'I don't like to use products when I work with bangs because there's something about them being at the front of the head that makes them get oily quicker,' says Marcus.

If you need to tame frizz or puffiness, however, he suggests applying a lightweight finishing cream to the area by pinching the strands versus slathering it on.

To fix a cowlick, apply thickening spray on damp hair before blow drying with a small round brush to reprogram the hair and get it to fall where you want.

Because bangs tend to get greasy, you can wash them more frequently than the rest of your hair, says Marcus.

'Put a little bit of suds in your fingers and work through the hairline - just be very minimal with the amount of conditioner you use because it can weigh the hair down.'

DAMAGE CONTROL

When you want to get your bangs off of your face, Marcus recommends pulling them to the side with a simple bobby pin or a sophisticated clip. 'It's more mature than the barrettes Miley has been wearing. It makes it feel a little more chic.'

If you completely regret your decision to get bangs, you can soften the look by asking your stylist for layers around the face.

'They'll look less severe and your eye won't go straight to the bangs - it's a trick of the eye.'

And remember - they will grow out eventually. To speed up the process, 'taking supplements like iron and giving yourself scalp massages to increase blood flow to the follicles do help,' says Marcus.
