'I don't think they've ever slept in a bed before': Florida pastor and wife to adopt two homeless toddlers found near-naked outside their ministry's offices

  • Ronnie and Krystal Stewart saw the children outside their church
  • The boys had been living with their parents in Pasco County woodland
  • The couple offered to bathe and feed them for one night in November
  • But Social Services came to put the boys in foster care, so they stepped up
  • Now the couple, who already have three children, are adopting the brothers

When Pastor Ronnie Stewart and his wife Krystal were asked to take care of a pair of homeless toddlers one November night they knew they couldn't say no - but they had no idea that the two boys entering their home would one day become members of their family.

The boys, one two years of age, one just seven months old, were first spotted in a pile of trash bags outside Pasco County's Metropolitan Ministries office by Mark Purcell, its executive chef.

'There were actually four or five bags,' he told Fox 13. 'A child in a car seat was on top of a bag. The other child was sitting here with his feet, cold. They were only in diapers, no clothes.'

The boys' mother was nearby, seemingly hiding from Purcell. He learned that they were living camped out in the woods.

Krystal and Ronnie, of the town of Holiday, noticed them too when they were eating at a free food program that their Refuge Church runs in co-ordination with the Metropolitan Ministries.

On November 6 the couple saw the family outside their church again, where they had been sitting for around 10 hours, and asked the parents whether they could take the children in for the night to bathe and feed them.

The parents said yes, and Krystal and Ronnie, who already have three children of their own, took the poor kids home.

'They were covered in bug bites, head to toe,' Krystal told Fox 13. 'They were so filthy, that we actually had to bathe, and drain, and bathe again, two different times.'

'The toddler who did have shoes on didn't have any socks on. When we took his shoes off, the little skin on the top of his feet actually came off.'

The children then slept for ten straight hours, Krystal told Today. 'I don't think they've ever slept in a bed before,' she said.

Mom and dad: Krystal and Ronnie already have experience raising children - now they're able to put that experience to use once more with their new soon-to-be sons

They returned the children to their parents the next day. But the day after that their paths crossed again.

'We're walking out of service to our car and the parents approach us with their children and a social worker and ask us, "Would you be willing to temporarily take our children while we decide what we're going to do?" Krystal told Fox 13.

'We just looked at each other and knew, there was no other option. Of course we said yes.'

That turned into five months of caring, and now the Stewarts are planning to adopt the boys, to join their other children - Ronnie, 15, Riley, 13, and Selah, 8.

Their children have already taken to calling the boys their brothers, and the adoption paperwork is expected to be finalized at the end of the month - with a little help from a GoFundMe page to raise money for the adoption fees.

'We cannot deny God's sense of humor,' Krystal wrote on the GoFundMe page.

'My husband laughs as he remembers the conversation that we had the day before we met the boys. I was six weeks post-op from a total hysterectomy after battling an early cancer diagnosis and sadly said, "Well, no more kids for us!"'

And while many would think of the couple as being heroes, they just feel that they're doing what God intended for the boys.

'We don't look at it as we are somebody special,' Krystal says. 'We look at it as they are special, and we are just excited to be part of their journey.'

A new opportunity: Krystal says she didn't think she would have any more children after an early cancer diagnosis led to a full hysterectomy. 'We cannot deny God's sense of humor,' she said
