Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham Barclays Premier League RESULT: Harry Kane cancels out Philippe Coutinho's stunning strike

If this is where Tottenham’s title challenge begins to falter, then their consolation can be that they have made an almighty contribution to a fascinating season.

They haven’t fallen by the wayside yet. They will of course keep fighting to the end. But what they need right now is victories, with Leicester, four points clear, playing on Sunday.

They may fall short. But on Saturday evening they participated in a compelling game, which mirrored the entertainment value of the season.

FULL-TIME: Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham

It was a tremendous contest between two attacking teams and it ends 1-1 at Anfield. After a relatively low-key opening half, Philippe Coutinho broke the deadlock with a stunning curled effort. But Tottenham hit back through Harry Kane (who else?) who replicated the Brazilian's exploits with a sensational solo goal. Both teams had chances to score a winner but will head home with a share of the points.

Thanks for joining me today - I'll be back tomorrow at 12pm as Leicester welcome Southampton and Everton travel to Manchester United. Enjoy the rest of your evening!

Liverpool sub

92 mins: Ibe gets a run out by replacing Milner.

91 mins: Tremendous save from Mignolet to prevent Dembele from scoring a sensational winner. Spurs have a corner. Eriksen delivers the ball Alderweireld meets the ball with a header which flies wide.

88 mins: Tottenham win a free-kick in a dangerous position and you'd except Eriksen to step up. Here he is... The playmaker lets fly but he puts too much curl on it and Mignolet watches it go wide.

From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at Anfield

Hugo Lloris has shown this evening why France will be hard to beat at Euro 2016. Still, if Mamadou Sakho starts, others might have a chance.

Tottenham sub

86 mins: Scoring goals late on in the match has been a feature of Spurs' season so far but will they find a winner tonight? Meanwhile, Alli is replaced by fellow youngster Mason.

83 mins: So close for Liverpool! Coutinho, finding space just inside Spurs' penalty area, shoots at goal but his strike flies wide of the goal. The Reds looking stronger as we approach the final five minutes at Anfield.

Liverpool sub

Lallana's evening comes to an end as Klopp replaces the former Southampton star with Allen. The German going more defensive now with less than 10 minutes to play.

79 mins: Worrying signs for Tottenham fans as Lloris is limping around his penalty box. The Frenchman go down low to save for Origi a couple of minutes ago and it looks like he picked a knock up.

78 mins: Spurs are knocking on the door for a winner and Alli almost proves to be the hero. The midfielder chests the ball down inside the penalty box but his touch is slightly heavy and Mignolet is able to sweep up.

74 mins: Tremendous challenge from Rose to prevent Milner from breaking clear down the right flank. But Liverpool win the ball back and attack Spurs goal, with Walker turning the ball away for a corner.

72 mins: Eriksen does magnificently to see the run of Chadli and the playmaker plays the substitute clear through but he fails to take advantage and Liverpool eventually clear the ball away from danger.

Liverpool sub

Origi comes on for Sturridge who has endured a frustrating evening.

70 mins: Coutinho has the beating of Walker almost every time he runs at the right back and it almost proves decisive for the hosts. He teases Walker one way, then the other, but his cross is cleared by Spurs.

68 mins: Henderson wins his side a corner which is defender well by Tottenham. But the hosts fail to clear their lines and Coutinho fires in a thunderous low drive which is inches from being deflected into the back of the net. Let off for Liverpool.

67 mins: What a game we're being treated to now. Lallana sprays a wonderful pass to Coutinho and the Brazilian shows net footwork to play in Henderson but the captain's cross is deflected.

Spurs sub

Son, who has been lively down the right flank for Spurs, is replaced by Chadli with just under 25 minutes to play.

GOAL: Liverpool 1-1 Tottenham (Kane)

That is a fantastic strike from Harry Kane. The striker levels the scores and it's exceptional play from the England star. He receives the ball inside the area before turning his marker and letting fly with a thunderous striker which flies into the bottom corner. There's no stopping him at the moment.

60 mins: Left back Rose is fortunate to escape a book after a blatant pull back

57 mins: Almost 1-1 and what a goal that would've been. Son latches on to a hopeful long ball and lets fly with a thunderous volley which flies inches wide. Close call.

56 mins: Sturridge has to be putting that away. Coutinho floats in an inch-perfect ball to the striker and with just Lloris to beat, the England star puts his header over. He'll be kicking himself for that miss - Liverpool should be 2-0 up.

GOAL: Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham (Coutinho)

What a goal by Liverpool and it's that man Coutinho! Slightly against the run of play - Spurs have started the second half the better team - Liverpool go on the attack and break the deadlock through the Brazilian. Sturridge plays the playmaker in and he curls a stunning right-footed effort into the bottom corner. Great goal - and a huge one for Leicester too.

49 mins: A Spurs win would see them close the gap on league leaders Leicester to just two points and it looks the more likely outcome at the moment. The White Hart Lane outfit are piling the pressure on but Liverpool are standing firm.

48 mins: What a chance for Tottenham! Kane delivers a wonderful ball into the box but an unmarked Alli misjudges his header when he should perhaps have scored. Let off for Klopp.

46 mins: Eriksen superbly switches the ball to the right side and Tottenham attack the Liverpool goal. Kane and Alli both have half-chances to regain possession but the Reds are quick to pounce on them.

We're back underway at Anfield

It's Tottenham who get the game back underway, with the title-chasing north London club kicking off from right to left. A massive 45 minutes for the visitors.

HALF-TIME: Liverpool 0-0 Tottenham

Jon Moss blows his whistle for half-time and it's honours even at Anfield. The best chance of the opening 45 minutes went to Daniel Sturridge but the striker's shot was easily saved by Hugo Lloris. For Tottenham, Harry Kane has ran clear through on two occasions but blew both chances.

43 mins: Alli swivels on the edge of Liverpool's penalty box and attempts to play in Dembele who was surging forward but puts a bit too much on the ball. Moments later and the star midfielder sets himself up for a speculative shot but it's an easy height for Mignolet.

42 mins: Worrying signs for Tottenham as Danny Rose stays down after a strong challenge from Nathaniel Clyne.

39 mins: Lloris is proving to be Tottenham's hero at the moment, producing yet another exceptional save to prevent Lallana again. This time the midfielder volleys towards goal and the ball takes an awkward bounce which the Frenchman does well to read before punching away.

38 mins: For the second time in this first half, Harry Kane wasted a great goalscoring opportunity. The striker beats Sakho to the ball and with Alli running alongside him, the striker opts to take it on his own but sees his shot blocked.

37 mins: Great save again from the Spurs goalkeeper as Lallana is prevented from scoring the opener. The former Southampton star curls his effort towards the bottom right corner but Lloris is hand to parry the ball away.

Chance for Sturridge

35 mins: It's the type of chance you's expect Sturridge to score from but the England striker fires his shot straight at Lloris. He had plenty of time to take aim and perhaps shot slightly too early.

34 mins: Clyne, who is in his preferred right back position this evening, surges forward for Liverpool and the hosts eventually win a corner. Coutinho floats the set-piece in but Spurs stand firm to defend. Not much to write home about at the moment.

From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at Anfield

Rumbustious atmosphere at Anfield. Referee Jon Moss getting it for booking Coutinho for a dive and not giving Milner a penalty. Both decisions looked correct however

32 mins: There's been plenty of crunching challenges in this first half and this time it's Coutinho who falls to the pitch after taking a heavy knock.

30 mins: Can's fortunate there after his sloppy pass plays in Eriksen but the Denmark star is pushed onto his weak foot and Liverpool are able to close him down inside the box.

28 mins: Eriksen breaks down the left and looks to find Kane, who was surging forward for Spurs, but Sakho does enough to intercept the ball. Spurs are moving through the gears now but so far so good from Liverpool's defence.

26 mins: Klopp sees the funny side when the Anfield faithful cheer believing their side has won a penalty only for John Moss to point for a goal kick. Confusion there but the German smiles on the touchline. Never a dull moment when Liverpool play.

25 mins: Tottenham should be one up. Kane breaks down the left and Liverpool's defence fail to close down the striker but he fires his shot wide of the goal. Poor miss from the in-form England star.

23 mins: Even opening 23 minutes at Anfield with both teams forcing the opponent's goalkeeper into a smart save. Liverpool then break but Coutinho is booked for a dive - Wimmer was not happy with the Brazilian there.

A couple of early crunching tackles

20 mins: A smart save from Lloris prevents Son from scoring an own goal. The Frenchman gets down to this right to turn the ball around his post for a corner.

19 mins: Almost a disastrous mistake by Mignolet as the goalkeeper delays his clearance and fires it straight at Kane. Fortunately for the Belgian, the ball flies wide of his goal and out for a goal kick.

17 mins: As often seen by Klopp's Liverpool side this season, the hosts are pressing Tottenham at every opportunity but the visitors are more than comfortable with playing quick passes.

15 mins: Liverpool win a free-kick in a dangerous position but Coutinho's set-piece has too much on it and Lloris has the easy task of collecting the ball. Spurs go up the other end and win a corner.

From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at Anfield

Klopp stands, hands above head, applauding a sweet Liverpool move. Tottenham's inability to stem it incenses Pochettino who leaps from the dug-out into the technical area fists clenched to remonstrate with his players. It's good on the pitch, and Germany-Argentina is utterly fascinating viewing just off it

14 mins: Lovren has had a superb start to this game and is on hand again for Liverpool to prevent Walker from delivering the ball into the box. The Anfield faithful enjoyed that challenge.

Son and Can compete for the ball
Tottenham's Son Heung-min in action with Liverpool's Emre Can

11 mins: Two good chances to score for Liverpool. Firstly, Milner finds space inside the penalty box but the midfielder takes a heavy first touch and his shot is blocked by the Spurs defence. Moments later and Coutinho's effort is saved by Lloris. The Brazilian could perhaps have done better on the edge of the area,

A happy Mauricio Pochettino
From Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein at Anfield

Spurs No 20 Dele Alli is playing in the No 10 role - with the man wearing No 10 Harry Kane ahead of him. Confused? Tottenham hope the Liverpool defence will be, and there is an early energy about Alli's game that is eye-catching.

8 mins: Great save from Mignolet to prevent playmaker Eriksen from open the scoring. The play begun when Rose superbly switched the ball from the left side of the pitch to right back Kyle Walker. Walker continued his run and when the ball found its way to Eriksen, he let fly with a powerful left-footed drive by Mignolet was on hand to parry the ball away.

7 mins: Eriksen, as expected, is pulling the strings for Tottenham in midfield and almost plays in Kane but Lovren is one step ahead of the striker and intercepts the ball.

5 mins: Bright start to this game, with both teams looking to retain possession in midfield. Clyne whips in a teasing delivery in the box but no Liverpool players were inside the area. Klopp will be fuming with Sturridge and Co.

3 mins: It's now Liverpool's turn to attack and Milner wins a free-kick on the edge of Spurs' penalty box. Needless challenge by Wimmer. Henderson whips in a delivery and the ball finds its way to Coutinho but the Brazilian's shot is blocked.

1 min: Tottenham win an early throw in and they immediately attack down the left flank, with Danny Rose looking lively in this opening minute. Down the other wing, walker looks to play in Son but the right back gets his pass completely wrong.

Here we go...

Liverpool get us underway at Anfield and will attack from right to left.

Steven Gerrard says Dele Alli might want to prove a point when Tottenham travel to Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool reportedly backed out of a move to sign the England star prior to his transfer to Tottenham in January 2015. There are suggestions the Reds, then under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers, tried to renegotiate the fee for the former MK Dons midfielder and collapsed the deal.

That the quibbled price was reportedly less than the £5million Tottenham paid for his services makes the decision look even dafter in hindsight.

James Milner has been impressed with how quickly Roberto Firmino has adapted to the Premier League after his trick start to life in England.

The Brazilian forward arrived from Hoffenheim in the summer for a reported £29million fee and initially struggled to justify the price tag, scoring only one goal in a Liverpool shirt before the New Year.

However the arrival of Jurgen Klopp saw Firmino move into a more advanced role and since his brace against Arsenal in mid-January the 24-year-old has looked a different player.
