He recently surprised fans by unveiling a nose piercing. 

And Justin Bieber revealed his latest change to his appearance on Saturday - dreadlocks. 

The 22-year-old singer echoed the sentiments of many of his fans when he captioned the Instagram post of his new hair-do: 'Why?'

A second selfie of his intentionally matted blond strands was left blank of caption, and taken in the mirror in black and white. 

He's shirtless in the snap, revealing his giant cross tattoo on his chest. 

The Love Yourself hit-maker is no stranger to shaking up his hairstyles - having graduated from the floppy fringe he sported when he launched his career seven years ago.

In January he had a brief and perhaps ill-advised spell with cornrow-style braids whilst on vacation.  

He absolved himself of responsibility for that look, blaming sometime girlfriend Hailey Baldwin, and removing them quickly. 

'Hailey made me get corn rows,' he explained at the time, but she doesn't seem to be on the scene to take the blame for the dreadlocks.

Last week he shared a cryptic message which read: 'In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.'

Perhaps the Canadian heartthrob will take his own advice in letting go of the dreads and returning to his regular blonde floppy crop.  

The star is due to play the iHeartradio Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, before hitting the road again with his Purpose Tour resuming in Denver on Monday.
