'It became unbearable for him': Drew Barrymore's 'hippie-dippy nature put strain on marriage to conservative Will Kopelman'

Drew Barrymore and husband Will Kopelman reportedly struggled to save their marriage because of their clashing temperaments.

Days after the couple confirmed their plans to end their marriage of almost four years, reports have emerged that their relationship began crumbling shortly after they wed and had fallen apart over the last six months.

'She's so hippie-dippy and all over the place and it started to become unbearable for him', a source told Us Weekly this week.

They added that the 41-year-old actress 'tried to be what Will wanted' but that 'she just isn't a normal housewife' due to her carefree and free-spirited nature.

'She just didn't fit in,' an insider said of the actress, who reportedly found the quest for perfection as 'tough'.

'Will is a great guy from a stable family and everything she didn't have growing up, but it just wasn't making her happy.'

Drew had a troubled childhood. Born into acting she was just seven-years-old when she starred as Gertie in E.T and following that she became increasingly wild and rebellious.

Spending time in nightclubs as an adolescent, she had been to rehab twice before she was 20-years-old.

Art consultant Will, 38 and his parents, former Chanel CEO Arie and wife Coco, offered the actress the stability she craved and an idyllic, more conservative lifestyle in New York.

She also struck up a close bond her sister-in-law, Jill Kargman.

After they married in 2012 Drew was embracing her new life, telling Allure magazine the following year: 'Back then I was more wild and fun, but I'm so happy where I am now. I'll never be ashamed of who I was, but I love how traditional I have become.'

But over recent years the couple had been living separate lives and in the past six months were barely spending time together at all.

Will was more of a homebody, spending much of his time at the couple's $8.3 million New York pad while Drew was often traveling, meaning the couple was apart for weeks at a time.

Drew became increasingly more focused on her business ventures, namely her Flower Beauty cosmetics range and Barrymore Wines, a collaboration with Carmel Road winery.

The couple would unite for important events however, including Will's mother's birthday in November and a pal's California wedding in March.

Sources say that Will and Drew weren't always sharing a bed and that when they stayed at their Hollywood Hills home the actress would often bunk in the guesthouse while Will would stay in the main house with the kids.

During a photoshoot in October, where she was encouraged by the photographer to imagine being seduced by her husband, the 50 First Dates star reportedly admitted: 'Well, we haven't had sex in over a year so that might be tough!'

The couple married in June 2012, and even at the start of the relationship the actress spoke candidly about the lack of passion in the couple's relationship.

'He was someone who was always reachable on the phone,' she told InStyle, 'someone who was a classy human being.'

She added: 'It was never really love at first sight.'

Just last December, Drew gave a candid insight into their differing temperaments when she told UsWeekly that she had learnt to compromise.

'My husband used to tell me, "I hate that we're always racing to the airport. It's like an anxiety attack."

'And I thought, "Yeah, why am I fighting for that?" I don't like anxiety, so now I pack the night before'.

The star explained she tried to 'lay off' her husband's buttons - and vice versa.

She told the publication: 'My husband and I compromise on a lot of things like that, it's the little things that you can change that can make the relationship stronger.

'Compromise is about changing yourself for the better, it's an opportunity for you to become a more functional, better person.'

In a joint statement on April 2 the pair insisted that their daughters, Olive, three, and 23-month-old Frankie, will remain their top priority as they separate.

'Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,' they told People magazine.

'Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on.

'Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.'

Drew first tied the knot aged just 19, but the marriage to bartender Jeremy Thomas in 1994 lasted less than two months.

Her second wedding, in 2001, to her Charlie’s Angels co-star Tom Green fell apart nearly as quickly and the pair split after five months.
