Live like a Sex Pistol: Johnny Rotten's former Chelsea home where he partied hard in the late 70s is up for let (for £1,295 a WEEK)

  • Punk rocker, real name John Lydon, 60, owned the Gunter Grove property
  • The three-bedroom apartment is situated over three floors of the five-storey building
  • Lydon bought the property in 1978, and sold it in 1981 to move to New York

If you can afford to splash out £1,295 on rent every week then you could live in the former Chelsea home of the Sex Pistol's Johnny Rotten.

As the enfant terrible of punk, the singer is synonymous with antisocial behaviour, so the mind boggles at what must have gone on in the confines of his property on Gunter Grove.

The punk frontman, real name John Lydon, 60, owned the entire five-floor property in the late seventies, but the building has since been divided up into two apartments.

Back in Lydon's day, the apartment on Gunter Grove had smoke-stained walls and a low-slung futon style couch.

But it has since been given a high-end makeover to fit in with the area's ra-ra feel. Johnny Rotten would most certainly not approve.

In the Seventies, the nearby King's Road was at the epicentre of the punk scene, but the locals are now a rather more sophisticated crowd.

The apartment still has plenty of the original features including the fireplace and elaborate cornicing, which are excentuated in dark wood.

High ceilings, mirrored walls and soothing neutral tones create a bright spacious living area.

But along with the funky black and white prints on the wall there are plenty of luxe elements - including a chandelier dripping with crystals.

Upstairs, there are cream carpets and marble bathrooms, and a rich mixture of textures continue the luxurious theme.

Despite only occupying part of the building, the three-floor Chelsea pad is still plenty spacious enough at 1,358sqft.

Lydon bought the property in 1978, the year the Sex Pistols split, and moved into it with fellow bandmates from his then newly formed band Public Image Ltd. He sold it in 1981 when he moved to New York.

It's no surprise that there are stories of wild partying, drug taking and anarchic behaviour that have gone on at the Chelsea property.

The eclectic mix of party guests are said to have included Bay City Rollers Les McKeown, composer John Barry and Lydon's former bandmate Sid Vicious.

Estate agents Savills, who are marketing the property, describe it as a 'modern split level period conversion, with high ceilings and bundles of light throughout'.

Danielle Fearnon, Head of Savills Chelsea Lettings, said: 'Chelsea has long been one of London’s most fashionable locations, with world-class restaurants, designer fashion and independent boutiques, antiques, art, and full of history.

'It has also developed a reputation as an artistic colony and a centre of bohemianism, and was the heart of ‘swinging London’ in the 1960s. Punk followed soon after in the 70s with Vivienne Westwood’s iconic clothing store SEX.

Today the area is less rock ‘n’ roll but with property on offer including studio apartments, bijou mews houses to detached villas and grand townhouses, Chelsea continues to attract a diverse crowd from young fashionable flat sharers, families with children, buyers and renters in the finance sector and an eclectic mix of international residents too.

'The property on Gunter Grove will have broad appeal, and will probably attract a group of young professionals looking for a cool statement pad, or single occupier in search of a apartment perfect for entertaining, with space for a study and a spare room.'

Another former Sex Pistols property, the band’s former townhouse on Denmark Street, has also recently been awarded a rare Grade II* listed status – helped by Rotten’s graffiti and cartoon drawings that remain intact in the property.
