Erik Bauersfeld, the actor best known for uttering 'it's a trap' as Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars, dies at 93

Erik Bauersfeld has passed away at the age of 93.

The veteran actor was best known for his role as Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi and even returned for Episode VII: The Force Awakens last year.

Bauersfeld passed away on Sunday morning at his home in Berkeley, California, his manager Derek Maki confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

As if being a part of the space opera wasn't enough to add to his legacy, his signature line, 'It's a trap,' has been one of the most repeated phrases from the franchise by in pop-culture and by die-hards.

He also voiced Jabba The Hutt's majordomo Bib Fortuna in the 1983 flick.

His involvement in Star Wars did not end there as he returned as Ackbar in last year's blockbuster sequel directed by JJ Abrams.

Bauersfield had a very successful voice acting career out of the galaxy far,far away as he used his vocal talents  in A.I. Atificual Intelligence and last year's Crimson Peak.

He also read for the iconic part of Yoda in the franchise and was one of the last up for the part but ultimately lost out to puppeteer Frank Oz.

The radio dramatist was also featured in video game Star Wars: X-Wing released in 1993.

Bauersfeld returned to video games as he voiced his signature character in Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron 16 years later in 2009.

He also had a career outside of radio and voice work as he served as Director of the KPFA's drama and literature department for thirty-one years. 

The organisation is a listener-funded progressive radio and music station located in Berkeley, where Bauersfeld lived.
