Hear Ryan Beaver's Turbulent 'Rum and Roses'

Heavy new track appears on singer-songwriter's forthcoming album 'Rx,' due in May

Ryan Beaver has released the song "Rum and Roses" from his forthcoming album 'Rx.'

Ryan Beaver's new song "Rum and Roses" fades in with a rising wall of static and feedback, a buzz that gradually fills the space like a hangover. The same could be said of the relationship at the song's core — intoxicating and beautiful at first glance but ultimately poisonous and bloody by daylight.

The track, which appears on the Texas native's forthcoming third album Rx (out May 6th), melts into a sludgy guitar riff that employs a classic country song form to carry the message. "Ride the buzz 'til the sun's up/ Then we'll say that it's over/ 'Til the next time I show up with rum and roses," Beaver sings, the simplicity of his lyrics underscoring the emotional weight behind them. And yet, for a song that depicts people in such an undignified, self-destructive cycle, its thumping low end and instantly recognizable hook are the kinds of elements that win crowds in a live setting.

"'Rum and Roses' is just a simple three-chord country song but with a heaviness that matches the lyrics," explains Beaver. "It has been the song we open the set with and by the second chorus people are usually singing along. It's a song about giving into temptation while knowing what the repercussions are."

"Rum and Roses" follows the powerful first single from Rx, "Dark." Rx will be available May 6th and Beaver has several dates lined up through the South and up the East Coast this spring to support it.
