It is normally children's school attire that is subject to rules and judgement, but actress and singer Hilary Duff found that parents are subject to scrutiny too after she wore thigh-skimming shorts for the school run.

The 28-year-old mother's outfit of cut-off denim shorts, a baggy jumper, long trench coat and sneakers sparked an online debate over what is appropriate for the school drop-off.

Hilary, who lives between New York and Los Angeles, claims she is normally a style 'disaster' when she drops Luca, her son with ex-husband retired ice hockey player Mike Comrie, 35, for school - opting for either sweat pants or leggings.

But yesterday she was so pleased with her 'cute' outfit that she posted it on her Instagram and even suggested other mothers try to recreate it.

After sharing the picture with her 5.5 million followers however, she was inundated with comments - many of whom questioned whether her shorts were school-appropriate.

While some were supportive, others responded with derogatory comments.

She wrote: 'Hey moms! I came up [with] a semi cute outfit for school drop off! I usually roll in sweat pants or lulu lemons and look like a disaster but this morning I managed to throw something cute together and I thought would share.

'Cut offs or jeans. A light weight trench over a sweater or tee, cross body bag sneaks or booties and a pair of Sunnies! Now you try! Tag me in your photo...(annnnd you don't have to wear such a serious face haha) [sic]'.

The picture was liked 115,000 times but also attracted nearly 1,000 comments.

'You call this cute?!? A lady of class and substance wouldn't be caught wearing this even in her worst hair day... [sic]' Rodney McKay commented.
