Liverpool youngster Daniel Trickett-Smith shown door four years after club splashed £1m to bring him to Anfield

  • Daniel Trickett-Smith is to be released by Liverpool at end of the season
  • The youngster was brought to Anfield in deal worth £1million in 2012
  • But the 20-year-old has failed to make a first team appearance for the club

Liverpool's young midfielder Daniel Trickett-Smith has been told to look for another club - four years after a £1million deal took him to Anfield and marked him out as one of the brightest 16-year-old talents in the country.

Trickett-Smith was tipped to be a future Reds No 10 when Liverpool beat Manchester City to his signature after both clubs watched him develop at the respected academy at Crewe Alexandra.

He helped Liverpool reach the FA Youth Cup semi-final in 2013 alongside Jordon Ibe and earned a three-year professional contract as a result.

But the competition has ultimately proved too fierce for the Staffordshire youngster who saw Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana all signed for big money in his position during his time at Anfield.

Now 20, he has been informed he will not be offered a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer, and can spend the remainder of the current season trying to set himself up elsewhere.

While his Youth Cup team-mates Ibe, Jordan Rossiter and Jerome Sinclar have played under Klopp, Trickett-Smith did not make a first-team appearance for Liverpool, though he has impressed during appearances for the club Under 21s this season.

Championship side Huddersfield Town, who are managed by Klopp's former assistant and good friend David Wagner, have been linked with the player, whose difficulties establishing himself at Anfield after the early hype underlines how hard it is to make it at the top end of the Premier League.

Liverpool are believed to have paid an initial fee of £300,000 for Trickett-Smith rising to £1million if he established himself at the club.

The player, who is regarded as a creative midfield player, will now hope to follow in a long line of former Liverpool trainees who failed to make the grade at Anfield but went on to have good careers elsewhere.

They include internationals Stephen Warnock, Rickie Lambert and Kevin Sheedy, besides Tom Ince, Jack Hobbs, Craig Hignett, Tony Warner, Lee Peltier, Daniel Ayala, Adam Hammill, Jon Otsemobor and Stephen Darby.
