She's made it very clear recently that the big diamond she's been sporting on her left hand is not an engagement ring.

And now Nicki Minaj has told Ellen DeGeneres that she's reluctant to talk about her love life because of the reaction it provokes.

Instead, the rapper coyly described boyfriend Meek Mill as just 'a boy who likes me,' adding: 'We’re still figuring each other out. And in fact, I don’t even want to say that I’m in a relationship anymore.'

The 33-year-old performer has been dating Meek Mill since early 2015 and he has presented her with a very large diamond that she's been wearing on her ring finger but has now removed.

In an interview taped for broadcast on Thursday, Nicki explained to Ellen that she's not sure yet whether she wants to get engaged.

'I have two rings... from the boy that likes me,' she told the NBC chat show host. 'If I get a third ring that would be the Engagement ring.'

Pressed by Ellen abut whether she wants that third ring, she responded: 'I don't know.'

Nicki explained that she's reluctant to post things abut her relationship on social media after fans started saying she and the hip hop artist must have broken up when she didn't share photos of them together on Valentine's Day.

'It just made me realize no matter how great your life is .... you have to forget about everyone's approval... you have to keep those things sacred,' she explained.

'He and I are just two souls passing through the universe and I don't know whats going to happen.'

Nicki was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote her movie Barbershop: The Next Cut.

She stars in the comedy with Ice Cube, Regina Hall, Anthony Anderson and Common and plays a hair stylist.

'Ice Cube is someone I've always looked up to and so he was a big  part of why I wanted to do this particular movie,' she said. 'It felt like a real family on set.'
