Simply stylish! Kerry Washington wows in a striking black caped dress at the New York special screening of her upcoming HBO film Confirmation

While red carpet gowns usually demand attention thanks to intricate details and over-the-top designs, sometimes more is said with less.

Kerry Washington was a style superhero as she stepped out in a caped dress in New York on Thursday night.

Promoting her upcoming biopic, Confirmation, the 39-year-old star went for an understated and unexpected look.

The Scandal star hosted the special screening of the HBO film, which is out April 16, wearing a black off-the-shoulder dress.

Constructed with layers of plain fabric, the gown kept her physique under wraps thanks to its voluminous shape but with her decolletage and legs on display, it was far from matronly.

While simple, the dress' cape added a touch of drama worth of a red carpet walk.

Kerry kept her accessories to a minimum skipping wearing a necklace - though many would have been tempted to add a large statement piece - and adding just a pair of drop diamond earrings.

Matching the frock perfectly, the actress wore a pair of black pointed pumps

Keeping with her less is more theme, the Scandal star wore little makeup sans for a hint of pink on her lips and checks and lashings of mascara.

Kerry wore her hair swept up in a bun with her locks slicked against her head.

While her new movie is a very serious one, Kerry did have a bit of a laugh on the carpet, pulling faces into a mirror which was snapping pictures for Twitter.

Hill in 1991 accused Thomas of sexually harassing her and became in international figure in doing so.

The HBO film also stars Greg Kinnear as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who at the time was the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Judiciary and presided over the hearings for Thomas' nomination.

Hill has given her stamp of approval on Kerry's performance in the Rick Famuyiwa-directed film.

Speaking to Essence, she said: 'I loved her dignity and emotion.

'She appeared a lot more dignified than I felt during that moment, but she still lost nothing in terms of how painful the experience was. That is hard to convey, but she did it beautifully.'
