Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that, on average, people are better than random chance at matching the faces of strangers with a name. Try guess the names of strangers to their faces to see if you can beat a score of 64 per cent, which a computer algorithm managed. Researchers claim that manifestation of the name in a face might be due to people subconsciously altering their appearance to conform to cultural norms.

BBC Director General Lord Tony Hall has demanded urgent reassurance from outsourcing firm Capita after an undercover investigation by the Mail uncovered the methods used to catch licence fee evaders. The BBC pays Capita £59 million a year to catch people in default, while Capita offers a £15,000-a-year bonus if someone catches at least 28 people a week. The Hollywood A-listers seated in the front row at Sunday night's Oscars were just as stunned as viewers at home when the Best Picture award was given to the wrong movie. Announcers Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had accidentally been given the wrong envelope by accountants with PriceWaterHouseCoopers, who tabulate the Academy's voting. Meryl Streep gaped at towards the stage, while The Rock, seated behind her, looked equally confused. Sitting another row back was the Academy's president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who seemed just as out of the loop.

Accounting firm PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, who tally the Oscar results, issued an apology after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway wrongly announced La La Land as the winner of Best Picture, rather than the triumphant Moonlight at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. In a heart-stopping moment, the stars and producers of La La Land were stopped midway through their acceptance speeches and forced to hand their trophies to the stars of Moonlight. It has since emerged that there duplicates of each envelope, and Beatty had been handed the duplicate 'Best Actress' envelope, which saw Emma Stone with for La La Land, instead of the Best Picture envelope he was supposed to receive.

All night, the theme of the Academy Awards had been one of 'truth'. Warren Beatty strode on stage with Faye Dunaway to present the final award for Best Picture and gleefully seized on it: 'Our goal in politics is the same as our goal in art, and that's to get to the truth,' he solemnly declared. Then the most spectacular, humiliating, hide-behind-the-couch moment to ever befell any awards show happened on the night they conspired to damn Donald Trump with 'The Truth'.

The In Memoriam segment of the Academy Awards always tugs at the heartstrings. But for Jennifer Aniston one death was so raw she could barely get though her introduction. The actress choked up as she presented the melancholy montage, which did not have time to include the late Bill Paxton who tragically did just hours earlier. 

It was perhaps not the live TV appearance This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby was expecting when she agreed to join The One Show on Monday evening. The 36-year-old blonde beauty had joined hosts Matt Baker and Michelle Ackerley on the BBC programme to promote the third series of her sports panel show, Play to the Whistle. But the mother-of-three was taken aback when the Teletubbies ended up stealing the limelight, with one attempting to climb her skirt with his snout.

The jubilant group are understood to be chanting about beleaguered headteacher Michelle Brindle, currently at the centre of a furore after parents complained about her leadership. The school has been at the centre of an ongoing row involving school leaders, staff and parents which culminated with the school being closed with immediate effect at lunchtime today. Staff have filed sixteen grievances since September and the row reached a head this week when teachers staged a strike. Around 70 parents also protested outside the school. An investigation into the video and the circumstances surrounding the footage has now been launched by the council.

Members of the House of Lords faced the wrath of viewers as they lamented their £300-a-day expenses allowance. In the first installment of BBC Two's fly-on-the-wall documentary Meet the Lords, cameras were given rare and unprecedented access in the House in a bid to reveal what life is like as a Peer. However, some viewers were less than impressed as they watched the Lords quaff wine and discuss their allowances. Comments made by Crossbench Peer Lord Palmer led to something of a backlash on Twitter.

But Rod Stewart dismissed his superstar status that afternoon, as he and his wife Penny Lancaster decided to venture to his gig on humble public transport. In a bid to keep a low profile, the 72-year-old rocker clad himself in sunglasses as he made his way to the venue on a number of trains and tubes, instead of in a private car - with his wife, 45, documenting the whole saga on Instagram.

Police stormed the 12.54am London Kings Cross to Huntingdon service in the early hours of Sunday morning after three separate brawls (right) broke out after a woman put a bagel on another passenger's head (left). In the video, filmed by fellow passenger Dougie Stew, a woman can be seen targeting the victim as her friends chanted 'he's got a bagel on his head.' The incident saw the dense bread roll, with a hole in the centre, tossed out of the window while others were thrown around the carriage. Hertfordshire Police were called as the fight spilled onto the platform at Potters Bar and the train was stopped for almost 30 minutes as passengers were questioned about the fighting - but there were no arrests. Describing what happened Mr Stew said: 'These girls were grabbing bagel after bagel from their handbags and just putting them on people's heads and singing. Then it all kicked off at Potters Bar where another group started fighting and took some of the lads outside to settle their differences'. After the police investigated he added: 'By Hatfield everyone was best friends again'.

Richard Pitkin, 65, and his 58-year-old wife, Sarah (together, left and right), were found dead at the property in Stowmarket yesterday (inset). Neighbours said the couple had four children, two of whom lived at home and another two who had moved away to university. They described hearing two gunshots just minutes before police arrived at the scene. Mr Pitkin ran a carpentry business from the family home while his wife worked in a nearby charity shop. The pair, who moved into the property in 2009, had previously turned part of their home into a tea shop but closed it down two years ago.

Jewish women and children, who have been selected for death, walk in a line towards the gas chambers in a horrifying image (pictured) published in a new book. More than a million people - most of them Jewish - lost their lives at Auschwitz, which is near Krakow in modern-day Poland. The book's author, military historian Ian Baxter said: 'It shows the step-by-step transformation of the buildings including the crematoria and how these buildings aided the largest killing factory of all time. Many of these buildings are still standing today.'

Andrew Saunders (pictured left) brutally stabbed Zoe Morgan, 21, and Lee Simmons, 33, (both right) to death outside their workplace (inset) in Queen Street, Cardiff, in September. Minutes later he texted his father: 'Thanks for being a pathetic, useless father. Just killed two people. Cheers.' Saunders, 20, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court in December and admitted two counts of murder. Prosecuting, Philip Bennett QC told Cardiff Crown Court that Miss Morgan and Saunders had previously been in a relationship.

An amateur rugby league club whose players beat up an opposition forward during a game tweeted his girlfriend 'pipe down sweetheart' after she posted a video of the brutal brawl online. Fryston Warriors players gave Keighley Cougars' second row Emmerson Whittel (left with his girlfriend Chloe Akers) a broken jaw during a vicious fight (right) in their Challenge Cup game on Saturday. Mr Whittel (inset after the fight), a 22-year-old engineering student at the University of Huddersfield, was left with teeth fragments in his cheek, his wisdom tooth snapped, and injuries to his ears and eyes. When Miss Akers expressed outrage on social media, Fryston Warriors' official twitter account replied 'pipe down sweetheart'.

WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT: A Georgia man has been charged with murder after allegedly being involved in a fatal gun fight over a cellphone that was caught on harrowing surveillance video (left and right). De'Andre Malik Thomas (center inset), 20, turned himself into police on Friday afternoon in connection with the Thursday killing of Kareem Mano, 25. Mano, who was a recent father to a one-month-old baby boy, was shot at multiple times as he ran away from Thomas outside of the USA Grocery Store in Bloomfield, police say. He died at the scene from a gunshot to the chest.

Police in Russia are investigating a rush of teenage suicide attempts amid fears that they may have been manipulated by sinister social media groups. Two schoolgirls (left and right) fell to their deaths from the roof of a building on the weekend prompting fears they were influenced into doing it by games masters behind a craze called Blue Whale. Teenagers complete tasks like cutting themselves (inset) in the build-up to them being told to kill themselves on day 50 of being involved in the game.

A vintage puzzle has resurfaced this week leaving netizens scratching their heads as they try to spot not one but eight rabbits in this illustration. Darren February (inset) broke into the five-bedroom property (left and right, fleeing the scene) in upmarket Holland Park, through a patio door and stole jewellery and two passports. Just ten days after he burgled the X Factor supremo's (inset, with his partner Lauren Silverman) home in December 2015, he hit 52-year-old father and motorcyclist Kenneth Baldwin with a car and killed him, after driving up the wrong side of the road at 58mph. Southwark Crown Court heard how February had walked away chatting on his mobile phone after leaving the biker for dead at the scene of the crash. The 33-year-old was jailed last year for eight-and-a-half years for causing death by dangerous driving not far from Cowell's home. February had already been convicted of 37 burglaries, repeatedly targeting the wealthy areas of Kensington and Bayswater which provided 'rich pickings', prosecutor Denis Barry said.

Several bystanders were filmed dashing into the sea in Hawaii after a boy was swept out by the strong current. Footage shows the boy crawling out and then being dragged into the water. Luckily, several people then heroically dashed into the choppy waters to save the boy, and eventually he was carried to safety.

This is the heart-stopping moment a showboating driver in a £180,000 Ferrari came inches from smashing another car head-on after accelerating from a junction. Footage shows the petrolhead accelerate out of Goodwood race track near Chichester, West Sussex. But he loses control of the 205mph Ferrari 488 and it begins to fishtail, swerving all over the road.

The 31-year-old took to Instagram on Sunday to share an emotional photo of herself crying, explaining that she had been sobbing for hours because 'the pressure of "looking good" for a living is too much today'. Tess said that most of the time she can work 15-hour days and take care of both of her sons, but over the weekend it became too overwhelming for her. The mother-of-two noted that she was sleep deprived, struggling with hormonal breakouts, and lacking confidence since she gave birth last June.
