'An historic mistake': Sir John Major slams Brexit as he demands Theresa May CHARMS her EU counterparts instead of enraging them and tells her to prepare voters for the 'hurt' ahead

Sir John Major has branded Brexit an 'historic mistake' and demanded Theresa May halt the 'cheap rhetoric' that is damaging the chance of a good deal. In an incendiary speech that will infuriate Brexiteers, the ex-PM said his successor must 'charm' her EU allies and prepare the public for hard times ahead. Sir John hit out at Brexit less than a fortnight after Tony Blair urged Remain supporters to 'rise up' in defiance of Brexit. In a gloomy assessment of Britain's prospects, Sir John said a hard Brexit would leave the UK dependant on a dominant and unpredictable United States.

Emma Stone: 'One of the most horrible moments of my life'

Miss Stone, 28, (right) was celebrating being named Best Actress for her lead role in La La Land when Warren Beatty (left) and Faye Dunaway announced that the musical had won Best Picture. In what was the biggest fiasco in the ceremony's history the wrong name was read out and Moonlight had in fact won the award leaving the stars and audience (inset) in shock. Emma Stone has now told of her devastation at the gutting mistake.

It was the biggest mistake in Oscar history and it has led to few wild claims over how it happened, including one that it was DiCaprio, seen holding onto the envelope after giving the award before.

Photo shows crowd reaction to Oscars mix-up

The Hollywood A-listers seated in the front row at Sunday night's Oscars were just as stunned as viewers at home when the Best Picture award was given to the wrong movie. Announcers Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had accidentally been given the wrong envelope by accountants with PriceWaterHouseCoopers, who tabulate the Academy's voting. Meryl Streep gaped at towards the stage, while The Rock, seated behind her, looked equally confused. Sitting another row back was the Academy's president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who seemed just as out of the loop.

As the accountancy firm in charge of Oscar results has apologized for last night's Best Picture mix-up, MailOnline takes a look at how Oscar votes are cast and how the error may have occurred.

Disaster struck at the Oscars after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway wrongly announced La La Land as the winner of Best Picture, rather than the triumphant Moonlight, and Twitter showed no mercy.

Oscars: La La Land named Best Picture winner by MISTAKE

Accounting firm PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, who tally the Oscar results, issued an apology after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway wrongly announced La La Land as the winner of Best Picture, rather than the triumphant Moonlight at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. In a heart-stopping moment, the stars and producers of La La Land were stopped midway through their acceptance speeches and forced to hand their trophies to the stars of Moonlight. It has since emerged that there duplicates of each envelope, and Beatty had been handed the duplicate 'Best Actress' envelope, which saw Emma Stone with for La La Land, instead of the Best Picture envelope he was supposed to receive.

PIERS MORGAN: Hollywood can't see or recognize The Truth

HA HA HA HA HA... Sorry. Nope, not sorry. Let's be honest, the greatest Oscars fiasco in history couldn't have happened to a bunch of smugger, more deserving people. All night, the theme of the Academy Awards had been one of 'truth'. Warren Beatty strode on stage with Faye Dunaway to present the final award for Best Picture and gleefully seized on it: 'Our goal in politics is the same as our goal in art, and that's to get to the truth,' he solemnly declared. Then the most spectacular, humiliating, hide-behind-the-couch moment to ever befell any awards show happened on the night they conspired to damn Donald Trump with 'The Truth'.

Although the 2017 Oscar ceremony will probably go down in history as the biggest blunder ever, plenty of the Hollywood events have previously endured controversial moments.
