Real Madrid 3-0 Wolfsburg (3-2 agg) UEFA Champions League RESULT: Cristiano Ronaldo scores stunning hat-trick

They were backed to book their spot in the semi-finals and they've done it - with Ronaldo proving to be the hero with a stunning hat-trick. Be sure to return tomorrow where we'll be back for Bayern Munich travel to Benfica and Barcelona visit Atletico Madrid for the remaining quarter-finals.

The 10-time champions have won and it's all down to one man - Cristiano Ronaldo. A stunning hat-trick by the Real Madrid superstar books their spot in the semi-finals and they are joined by Manchester City, who defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 (3-2 agg). The pair are in the hat for Friday's draw, which will happen around 10.30am.

Heartbreak for the Germans who defied the odds to secure a first-leg victory but they were unfancied tonight and Real lived up to expectations. 

90+2 min: Wolfsburg piling the pressure on now and are hoofing the ball forward at every opportunity. But Jese breaks. But instead of taking the ball into the corner he tries to be clever and the Germans win the ball back. Full-time whistle must be near. 

90+1 min: Modric is replaced by Varane and the Croatian playmaker is given a standing ovation by the Real Madrid faithful. Another solid performance from him, as you'd expect. 

89 min: Bale, who has been quiet tonight, has a great opportunity to put this tie to bed by his right-footed effort is tame. Moments later and when he goes on the attack again, he is fouled by Vieirinha and the Wolfsburg man is booked. 

88 min: Ronaldo urges the Real supporters to get behind the winning team as the full-time whistle approaches. And they love it. 

85 min: Tremendous save from Benaglio to adjust his feet and prevent Real from putting this tie to bed. Jese's shot is deflected, changing the direction of the ball but the Wolfsburg No 1 reaches high to claw the ball away.

84 min: Patient build-up by Wolfsburg and towering centre back Naldo has become a makeshift striker in a bid to score a vital goal. Dante goes into the book for clattering Ronaldo. 

83 min: Jese comes on for Real as Zidane makes his first substitution of the night. 

Real Madrid fans are whirling their scarves round their head and stamping their feet. Unless Wolfsburg can get a goal in the final 10 minutes, their team are in the Champions League semi-final.

79 min: In the same minute, Ronaldo goes into the book for a silly challenge. 

79 min: Dost comes on for Guilavogui and the Germans have now made all their substitutions. 

HE CAN! Ronaldo has netted yet another Champions League hat-trick and he has single-handily turned this tie around. The Portuguese star steps up and send his free-kick through the wall and Benaglio sees it too late to be able to react. But with another look, that is a poor wall from the Germans. That's his 37th hat-trick for the Spanish giants. 

75 mins: Gustavo fouls Modric on the edge of Real's area and is booked for the challenge. Ronaldo steps up. Will he?

72 min: But it doesn't seem he's well enough to continue and Henrique is replaced by Caligiuri.

70 min: The game is stopped as Henrique receives treatment after Marcelo's stray arm caught the Wolfsburg star. Didn't seem much it that at all but he's stayed down for a while. 

69 min: Close! Dante with a free header but it's straight at Navas. 

68 min: Captain Ramos comes to Real's rescue when the Germans were almost clear on goal. They work the ball wonderfully down the left and just as Kruse was about to be released the centre back steps up and intercepts the ball. But the visitors win a free-kick. 

66 min: Vieirinha may have struggled in defence tonight but he's a danger in attack and the full back almost proves it. He bursts forward before shooting at goal but Navas is able to watch his effort fly wide. 

65 min: Real win yet another corner after Benzema's cross is blocked by Vieirinha. From the resulting corner Ramos' header smashed against the post and the rolls across the line before Benaglio shows smart reflexes to grab it before it rolls over. Inches.

63 min: Wolfsburg getting into there stride now and are beginning to exploit the space down the flanks. This time it's Schurrle who surges down the wing and whips in an early cross but Navas is alert and comes out to claim the ball. 

They've turned the heaters on at the Bernabeu so now the people sitting in the posh bits (and the journalists) are warm. But in the other parts of the stadium the fans aren't concerned about the weather - they are too busy trying to coax the ball into the Wolfsburg net for the crucial third goal.

61 min: Marcelo whips in a great corner but Ronaldo and Benzema both fail to get on the end of it. Seemed as if there was a slight mix-up there, one of them should have perhaps done better there. 

59 min: Smart save from Beaglio to save a deflected effort. In the build-up, Modric is blatantly fouled as he sent the ball into the box but he doesn't appeal. Thought there was something in that. Real still dominating. 

57 min: The result corner is kept alive by Real deep in Wolfsburg's half. A couple of header's eventually ends in Bale receiving the ball but his left-footed volley glides well over. 

56 min: Well he might - just not yet... The winger's effort is deflected out for a corner.

54 min: Ronaldo takes a tumble inside the box and despite a few loud jeers from the Real faithful, the winger didn't appeal. But now the Spaniards have a free-kick in a VERY dangerous position. You know who steps up. Will he get his hat-trick?

Amen to that, Rik. 

51 min: Schurrle loves a shot, as we saw during his time in the Premier League but this time his effort flies over the crossbar. Positive play from the Germans, though. 

49 min: What a ball from Modric who plays a delightful pass to Carvajal and the right back surges down the right flank before delivering a teasing ball into the box. But Benzema and Bale both pulled back in hope and it comes to nothing. 

46 min: It's a case of deja vu as Real enjoy a blistering start to this half - just like they did in the first half. They win corner after corner but when the ball finds its way to Marcelo the left back can't control the ball and he is crowded out. Corner again but Bale is penalised for a foul

Wolfsburg restart the match but don't forget there's another match going on tonight, too. You can follow Sportsmail's Dan Ripley here, where he guides you through Manchester City's clash with Paris Saint-Germain. It's 0-0 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate. City go through as it stands. 

Ronaldo has starred for Real while Schrulle is yet to excite in Spain. Here's how the game looks in the first half...

Even though Madrid tailed off towards the end, the fans cheer and applaud them in vigorously. The much-anticipated remontada - comeback - is within their grasp.

So there we have it - an entertaining first-half and the tie is dead level after two Cristiano Ronaldo goals in as many minutes. The first was slightly fortunate after the cross was deflected into his path but he showed great ability to leap above his marker and score the second moments later. Wolfsburg were beginning to threaten as the half went on and you wouldn't put it past them to score an away goal. But then you wouldn't put it past Real to score four goals... 

45+2 min: Arnold catches Casemiro with a late challenge is goes into the referee's book. The midfielder took a leaf out of Marcelo's book by making the most of that (with a few rolls included). 

45+1 min: Wolfsburg win a corner with perhaps the last kick of the first half. It's whipped in but as has been the case for most of the visitors' deliveries this evening, it has far too much on it and Real are able to counter-attack. 

43 min: Ramos shows his defensive ability to cover Marcelo, who has looked out of position on numerous occasions tonight. The Spaniard beats Henrique to the ball and plays it back to Navas.

42 min: Real just spraying the ball around in defence, happily keeping possession and it seems they'll take this score into the break.

40 min: We're into the final five minutes of the first half and the tie is dead level. Real in the ascendency but Wolfsburg have looked more dangerous since the arrival of Kruse on the pitch. The Germans perhaps should have at least one goal. 

37 min: What an opportunity for Wolfsburg. Henrique took far too long after receiving the ball inside Real's box and Ramos closes him down. Ball goes out for a corner but once again the Spanish side are able to defend. 

36 min: Kroos takes the resulting free-kick but Bale's header flies over the bar. Ronaldo was appealing to the referee suggesting he was being fouled. 

35 min: Marcelo, who remember theatrically went down in the first leg, goes down under the challenge from Vieirinha and wins a free-kick. Again, the defender makes a HUGE MEAL of it. The Real medics are on but it just seemed to be a stray arm... 

33 min: What a save from Navas. Gustavo let's fly with a long-range stunner and Navas produces smart reflexes to turn the ball over for a corner. From the resulting delivery, Real defend it well. 

32 min: Tremendous play from Bale to link up with Benzema but his cross is blocked by the Wolfbsurg defence. Smart defending there, that was going straight to the striker's feet. 

31 min: Disaster for Wolfsburg as Draxler pulls up injured and the playmaker is substituted by Kruse. 

28 min: Benzema almost gives Real the lead on aggregate but the Frenchman's shot is smartly saved by Benaglio. 

26 min: Better from Wolfsburg and Navas is called into action for the first time this evening. The Germans work possession wonderfully when Rodriguez sprays the ball over to the right wing. The ball eventually finds its way to Gustavo and the midfielder lets fly with a speculative effort which the goalkeeper is able to easily save. 

25 min: Benzema, who is working hard as Real's central striker, brings the ball down wonderfully but he is correctly ruled offside before he is able to let fly with a shot.

Despite their team's abject capitulation in the first 20 minutes, Wolfsburg fans have not yet given up hope. Or maybe they just like making noise.

23 min: Wolfsburg win a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the Real box. Draxler sends in an in swinging delivery and Navas is able to gather at the second attempt. 

21 min: Stunning stuff at the Santiago Bernabeu and you'd back Real to go on and win this in normal time now. Zidane's side are continuing to pile the pressure on the Germans and they can't cope. 

Unbelievable. We didn't have to wait long for that did we? The scores are level on aggregate and it's Ronaldo who single-handily draws them level with a trademark header. The corner is swung in and the former Manchester United star easily loses his marker to send a guided header past the helpless Benaglio. 

But remember, an away goal for the Germans would mean Real would need to win 4-1 on the night... 

Who else? It's that man Ronaldo who scores a vital goal and Real are now back in this tie. They have 75 minutes to score and take this quarter-final to extra-time. Carvajal's cross took a fortunate deflection and Ronaldo was there to fire home. 

14 min: After an exciting opening seven minutes or so, the pressure has died down a little bit now. Real are still attacking at every opportunity but Wolfsburg standing firm - so far.

When Wolfsburg have the ball Madrid fans start to whistle and the longer they keep it, the louder they get. Luckily Madrid have had the better of the opening stages so things haven't got too intolerable.

11 min: It's now Real's turn to swing in a corner and after the ball is cleared, it almost falls nicely to Kroos but the midfielder swings it a shot and completely misses the ball... 

9 min: Wolfsburg win a corner and when the ball finds its way to Rodriguez on the edge of the box, the defender opts to play the ball all the way back Benaglio rather than pile the pressure on Real. Bizarre. 

7 min: Real are moving through the gears now and they've just created the best chance of this opening half. Mordric links up with Benzema before receiving the ball back but his low cross for Ronaldo is cleared. Could and perhaps should have done better there. 

5 min: First glimpse of Ronaldo and he looks up for this! The Portuguese winger collects the ball on the edge of the box before making his way towards the right flank but he is eventually crowded it. But he showed some nice touches there. Seconds later and Ramos sees his header strike the top of the crossbar. 

3 min: Nervous start from the Germans but as Real found out at the Volkswagen Arena last week, they're very dangerous on the break. But Real are dominating possession, with most of the ball being played in Wolfsburg's half. And when the visitors do regain the ball, they hoof it upfield... 

1 min: Real almost are clear through on goal in the first minute but Benzema, who was an injury doubt ahead of this game, is offside. Correct decision by the linesman. 

Real Madrid fans believe their team can't be as bad as it was in the first leg and unrolled a banner down the Fondo Sur stand which features the Champions League trophy with three darts in it. That's the target, and a dart for each goal they need to turn this one around today.

PETE JENSON: Zinedine Zidane woke up on Tuesday morning on his 100th day in charge at Real Madrid knowing that only a win by a three-goal margin in the Santiago Bernabeu will be good enough for the supporters who will line the streets as the team bus makes its way to the stadium.

Real Madrid fans are optimistic – Zidane’s teams have scored over four goals a game at home since he took over and that ought to be enough against Wolfsburg. But he is urging calm. 

‘There are lots of messages about hotting things up but we need to keep cool heads,’ he said.

It’s been raining all day in Madrid but playing surface now drying out in early evening sunshine. Despite reports, Real have not widened the pitch. They are full of confidence and think they will get the 3-0 they need tonight. Wolfsburg players out on the pitch look quietly confident too – a narrow defeat and they are through.

PETE JENSON: Cristiano Ronaldo will be worth keeping an eye on at the end of Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

If the tie goes the way of Wolfsburg, then the most prolific player in Real Madrid’s history will be staring down the barrel of another trophyless season and, never one to hide his feelings, the sinking sensation will be written all over his face.

Ronaldo has smashed the records of the club’s greatest players Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas, but while they won five and three European Cups respectively he has won only one in Spain.

KIT HOLDEN: Wolfsburg have never been this popular. Founded and funded by Volkswagen, this is a club at which the rest of Germany tends to turn up its nose.

Not this week. This week, the Wolves of Lower Saxony are the toast of the Teutonic world. All the old prejudices have been put aside, as Wolfsburg stand 90 minutes away from completing the sensation of the season by knocking Real Madrid out of the Champions League.

'Everyone thought that the second leg in Madrid would just be a free holiday for us,' said Wolfsburg striker Andre Schurrle this week. 'But we shocked the world.'

What a difference four days make – there were no dressing room selfies in the Volkswagen Arena for Real Madrid after they went down 2-0 in Germany and now face Champions League elimination.

They started the game with a confident post-Clasico swagger but limped out of it having completely under-estimated the team currently placed eighth in the Bundesliga.

Gareth Bale was comfortably Real Madrid’s best player but Julian Draxler was in inspired form for the home side and Zinedine Zidane had lined his team up with no apparent plan as to how to contain him with Danilo back in the side at right-back and having a night to forget.
