'We do it like this in Oklahoma': Blake Shelton receives Whip and Nae Nae dance lessons from his singer on The Voice

The coaches on The Voice often say they also get to learn from their contestants.

Blake Shelton got to prove it for real on Monday's show as he was taught how to do the viral dance sensations the Whip and Nae Nae.

While hardly known for his dance moves, Blake, 39, was happy to jump up when his team member Paxton Ingram - a former dancer - offered to show him some steps.

And the country singer managed to avoid embarrassing himself when Paxton demonstrated the Whip dance as if someone was ‘chill’ and ‘laid back’ riding a car.

‘We do it like this in Oklahoma,’ Blake initially joked, pretending to put his non steering wheel arm on the window frame, before making his best attempts at the move.

He also got a quick tutorial on the Nae Nae dance.

Paxton wasn’t the only contestant teaching Blake a move - with Gwen Stefani’s boyfriend failing to hide his awe at some steps bartender Joe Maye threw into his rehearsals, too.

‘What’s that move you’re doing?’ Blake asked doing his own hammed-up attempt at moving across the floor.

‘Yeah! I like that,’ he told him, joking: ‘I’ve gotta add that to my Shelton shuffle!’

Paxton and Joe both managed to put on some of the most upbeat performances in the first night of the Live Playoffs on the show featuring Blake’s team alongside fellow coach Christina Aguilera.

And Paxton admitted the show has already made him some unexpected fans - including a cop who was called out when the singer got into a ‘minor fender bender.’

‘The first word from the cop when he gets in is, ‘Are you Paxton from The Voice?” He’s like, ‘I’m a big fan!”’ Paxton said with clear disbelief. ‘He took selfies.’

After his playoff performance of Calvin Harris’s How Deep Is Your Love, Pharrell insisted: ‘I feel like you had your moment just now. I’m happy for you.’

The performance also moved Blake to make his biggest quip of the night against nemesis Adam Shelton, telling Paxton: ‘I’m as confident that you’re going to move on to next week as I am that Adam’s going to do something stupid with his hair again sometime before this season is over.’

Blake had compared Joe Maye - who he stole from Christina after the Knockouts - to Bruno Mars, and raved about his take on Long Train Running by The Doobie Brothers.

‘I was happy, I was thrilled that I was able to get you on my team,’ he told him.

‘But after that incredible performance, dude, you got me thinking like - we have a shot to win this thing.

‘You did one of those performances, dude. You blew me away!’

But Joe was not the only one told he had a strong shot at winning, despite it only being the first night of the playoffs.

After Team Christina’s Bryan Bautista sang a sultry version of Zayn Malik’s Pillowtalk, Pharrell Williams told him: ‘You have what it takes to win, bro’.’

‘You’re a superstar,’ Adam agreed. ‘I’ve always loved what yo do, but tonight was a moment where I was just completely blown away. You murdered that song.'

Listening to the women screaming at his performance, Adam then joked of Bryan’s girlfriend: ‘She better hold on for dear life after tonight.’

Adam also made a similar prediction when Christina’s Alisan Porter closed out the night with a cover of Janis Joplin’s Cry Baby, telling her: ‘I said it like a million years ago when you came on the show, “That’s the winner of the show.”

‘So I’m not surprised by how miraculous that was. That was amazing.’

Fanning herself as she insisted she was ‘too overheated,’ Christina called her team member’s performance ‘insane’ and told her: ’You deserve to go the entire way and then some. I adore you - I’m a huge fan.’

While he did not predict he would win the show, Adam did tell Adam Wakefield that he was his ‘favorite right now in this competition’ - joking of the Team Blake hopeful: ‘I hate saying that because you are on his team.’

‘Other than the fact you’re on Blake’s team I absolutely love you, man, you’re amazing,’ Adam insisted.

After his version of Seven Spanish Angels by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson, Blake said his soulfulness was ’so precious that it makes me excited’ and insisted: ‘I think you’ve got one hell of a future in front of you, man.’

Blake, meanwhile, told Team Christina’s Tamar Davis she was one of his favorites, saying: ‘You have this presence about you that just makes me smile. And that is the best performance that you’ve had so far - and you’ve had some incredible preferences.’

Pharrell, meanwhile, told her: ‘You are definitely anointed. This is definitely what you’re supposed to be doing - please keep going.’

The coaches also get to bring back a formal eliminated artist, with Christina picking Nick Hagelin - who melted hearts by bringing his son who beat predictions he would never walk - back to take on Rihanna’s Stay.

‘Which is the perfect choice because this time you want to stay,’ Christina joked in rehearsals.

His former coach Pharrell told him: ‘You deserve to be on the show. You ended up on the right team - you ended up with someone who s a vocal wizard, who clearly has done much a great job with you. I’m so happy fr you and your family - you deserve this moment. And many more.’

Insisting she felt they were ‘destined to be together’ from day one, Christina said: ‘You proved on this stage why I brought you back.’

Blake, meanwhile, left his own former team member Justin Whisnant in tears as he surprised him with a message saying he was being brought back.

After warning him to watch his diction - telling him ’there’s a lot of city people and they need to understand what you’e saying’ - he predicted Travis Tritt would reach out on Twitter after watching him perform his song Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares).

‘Travis watches The Voice,’ Blake insisted. ‘He appreciates it when someone does his song, especially when they do it justice like that, man. Oklahoma’s proud of you tonight!’

Christina got Ryan Quinn - who she stole from Team Adam - to perform Sam Smith’s I’m Not the Only One, telling him afterward: ‘Vocally you can just do anything. You gave this song a whole new life.’

She also got Ryan - who joked about the ‘Quinnsanity’ in his home town over him being on the show - to take off his glasses for his performance and relate to the song by admitting he was once cheated on.

Adam praised Christina in being able to ‘crack the code’ in his former team member, admitting: ‘Without any ego I can say you’re in the right place and I’m just so happy.’

Another former Adam team member, Katie Basden - this time stolen by Blake - performed

Trisha Yearwood’s Georgia Rain, with her old coach telling her: ‘It just feels like you’re already a big country star who’s on her third record and is just coming to The Voice to perform.’

‘If your voice is any indication of what the future of country music looks like, I mean - it looks really good,’ Blake told her. ‘That was absolutely beautiful.’

After Mary Sarah, another of Blake’s country singers, took on Rose Garden by Lynn Anderson - dedicating it to her late grandmother - he teased her about his Twitter feed blowing from so many fan messages about her.

‘Her heart is 100 percent country and when she opens her mouth and sings there’s no question that there’s a hillbilly down inside there, and I think that’s what we love,’ he said.

Christina also had her own country singer, Kata Hay - and then tried to get her to reduce the amount of tremolo in her voice after she admitted she is a five-time international yodeling champion.

After telling her she had ‘no shortage of sass,’ Adam called her performance of (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman ‘an exorcism.’

‘I don’t know what that was but that was awesome. I loved that,’ he said.

Blake claimed that Season 10 of The Voice is so strong it is 'like watching the Grammys,’ insisting: ‘Every one of these artists blows my mind.’

‘We’re dealing with talent that goes beyond the show,’ Pharrell agreed. ‘I feel that they’re the future of music.’
