Annual Picnic June 27
June 27, 2015 will mark the annual Altadena Community Garden Picnic, “one of the biggest annual
community events in Altadena,” according to Silvera Grant, Garden President.
Hundreds of locals and dignitaries are expected to join Garden members for an open house; fresh, locallygrown,
home-style food; excellent barbeque; garden tours, raffles; live music; and resource booths from 12
to 5 p.m. in the Community Garden and adjoining Loma Alta Park, located at the corner of Lincoln Avenue
and Palm Street in Altadena. Tickets are available for $10 both in advance and at the gate, with no charge for
children under 5 years of age.
Gardeners provide hot and cold foods, many made from fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the Garden
itself. Several gardeners will tend BBQ grills for two days prior to the event, preparing ribs, chicken, beef
hot links, veggie burgers and hot dogs for the event. Deserts and bottled water will be served, too.
The picnic will be located inside the gates of the Garden. Tables will be set up and decorated with seasonal
flowers. Featured events will include live music, garden tours, and tennis demonstrations. Resource booths
will be staged outside the garden gates in the circular roundabout south of the Loma Alta Park tennis courts,
with representatives from the Altadena Farmers’ Market, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, LA County
Sheriff’s and Fire Departments, and other notable public and private agencies on hand.
About The Garden
The two-and-one-half acre corner of Lincoln Avenue and Palm Street holds 72 plots for over 128 gardeners
and associate gardeners. All pay annual dues – $73 for gardeners; $30 for associate gardeners. General
membership meetings are held to review the needs and activities of the Garden. Ongoing Garden projects
include the development of a water conservation plan, rainwater fruit tree orchard, community education
outreach, children’s gardening program, and hosting Master Gardener Victory Garden Program
classes.
A project of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Garden was formed in 1973
by a group of West Altadena residents who wanted to garden with neighbors. The informal group chose an
undeveloped plot of land in lower Loma Alta Park that is now the equestrian ring to cultivate local, healthful
fruits and vegetables. After the closure of the Mt. Lowe Military Academy, the gardeners persuaded the Los
Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation to relocate their Garden to the current location in the
lower section of Loma Alta Park. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation also installed
permanent fencing, irrigation and parking for the Garden. Garden members developed bylaws, and planted
fruit trees, herbs, roses, native plants, and succulents in communal areas. The Garden continues to work with
the Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation to maintain the Garden’s infrastructure and
amenities. For members’ shared use are picnic areas, a shaded deck, tool sheds, and walkways. Membership
dues provide hand tools, mulch and fertilizer.
