Mortgage rates remain low, but the buy-to-let future looks bleak as more tax rises await

The one-year countdown to even more tax rises due in the spring of 2017 has begun while the Bank of England is asking mortgage lenders to tighten up the acceptance criteria for new borrowers. This could see thousands frozen out of the buy-to-let market altogether. Pessimists such as the National Landlords Association have suggested that investors may sell off up to 500,000 properties in the next year as taxes rise and confidence and profits fall.
