Queen Letizia made sure that all eyes were on her today as she stepped out in a statement red peplum dress.

The Spanish royal, 43, looked regal in a Carolina Herrera dress complete with matching heels and a dash of scarlet lipstick.

She also tamed her naturally wavy hair by putting it into a chignon for today's event, an Audience with Spanish Royals.

The former journalist was joined by her husband King Felipe VI, 48, at the palace in Madrid today where they received special guest figure skating world champion Javier Fernandez at Zarzuela.

Fernandez is surely to be guest of honour at tonight's event considering his recent triumph taking home the World figure skating crown at the beginning of this month.

The Spaniard's Guys and Dolls routine saw Fernandez awarded 216.44 for his free skate, the second best score of all time, and 314.93 in total.

Following his wine Fernandez said: 'I told myself, "I have a chance to win and I have to do a clean programme" and I did.'

'It was not an easy day, not an easy month with a couple of injuries. I couldn't do practice yesterday or early practice today.

'I went to the medical room today and they helped me so much so that I can have my skate on and actually skate,' said Fernandez, revealing that a sore swollen heel had threatened to derail his title defence here.

Although she has recently been wearing it straight Letizia tamed her naturally wavy hair back into a chignon for today's event, an Audience with Spanish Royals which she hosted with her husband

'I knew I had a chance to do the best programme of my life but it was not easy to do. I got my mind really set and I just wanted to do it,' he said.

The 25-year-old skater beamed with pride as he stood between the Spanish King and the stunning Queen in red today.

This is not the first time that we have seen Letizia in the glamorous Carolina Herrera dress having worn it for the World Food Day event in Milan in October last year.

For that occasion the royal swapped her red heels for a plain black pair in order to best showcase a red hot snake skin clutch.
