The city is safe for another year! Ben McKenzie will continue to police Gotham as Fox renews the drama for a second season

It's been one of the season's biggest hits since debuting in September.

And Gotham will continue to tell the superhero origin story of Batman and several of his iconic villains as Fox has renewed the series for a second season.

In addition, the network has given the nod to a third season of sitcom Brooklyn Nine Nine, as well as greenlighting a second season of musical drama Empire after only airing two episodes.

Co-starring Ben McKenzie as police detective James Gordon, Gotham has been averaging around 10.6mil viewers each week and is Fox's highest-rated fall drama in over a decade, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show follows as McKenzie's character tries to solve the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne and later forms a friendship with their young son Bruce, who grows up to be Batman.

Jada Pinkett Smith also stars as Fish Mooney, a nightclub owner and mobster who is trying to overthrow the city's reigning underworld kingpin.

Andy Samberg's sitcom Brooklyn Nine Nine continues to perform well and is set to continue for a third season.

The comedy is set in the backdrop of police station in the famed New York City borough also co-stars Andre Braugher, Terry Crews and Melissa Fumero.

It has received a surge in the ratings since moving to Sundays after originally airing on Tuesdays during its freshmen season.

But making the biggest surprise was the speedy renewal of new addictive series Empire after only airing two episodes.

The soap opera - created by The Butler director Lee Daniels - is set inside the world of a hip hip music mogul's dynasty and has been the breakout hit of the season since its premiere on January 7.

Boasting a talented cast of Oscar nominees including Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard and Gabourey Sidibe, the show has has averaged 10.3mil viewers and tied ABC's How To Get Away With Murder as the number one new broadcast series in the highly coveted 18-49 demographic.
