If you want to take a pill in Ibiza anytime soon, you'll soon have to pay a new tax to do it. A "Sustainable Tourism Tax" will go into effect July 1 on the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca and dance music mecca Ibiza. A similar "environmental contribution" tax of 0.50 euros a night for travelers over the age of 18 will be collected in Malta beginning in June.

The Sustainable Tourism Tax is for visitors over the age of 16, and ranges between 0.50 and 2 euros a night -- the final cost is dependent upon the class of your lodgings, with smaller taxes for backpacker lodgings and larger taxes for four- and five-star beach resorts. Travelers visiting the islands for "health reasons" will be exempt from the Sustainable Tourism Tax, so get your doctor's notes ready for this summer's hottest all-night parties.
