A WWE wrestler was seriously injured during a pay-per-view event on Sunday night.

Enzo Amore, 29, real name Eric Arndt, had just begun a tag team 'Payback Sunday' in which he faced opponents The Vaudevillains with his tag team partner Colin Cassady.

As the match began he was thrown from the ring into the ropes and his neck snapped backwards.

Lead play-by-play man Michael Cole told the audience that Amore was on his way to the hospital.

Prior to the main 'Payback Sunday' event, Cole said that Amore had been diagnosed with a concussion at the hospital but all other tests were negative, CBS reported.

WWE later confirmed this in a tweet.

At first it was said he was being treated for an undisclosed injury but a tweet later revealed Amore was able to move his limbs and speak to medical staff, which is a good sign.

Many people including Mick Foley, Steve Austin and WWE tweeted their support for the wrestler.

Amore was released from the hospital early Monday morning.

Certain sports have come under scrutiny in recent years for exposing athletes to Chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE.

CTE is a degenerative disease, like dementia, that is caused by trauma to the brain.

This often is developed through multiple concussions, like the one sustained by Amore.

CTE was initially associated with boxers but has now become prominent in other sports.
