Jared Goff drafted by Los Angeles Rams as No 1 pick in NFL Draft with Carson Wentz taken by Philadelphia Eagles at No 2

  • The Los Angeles Rams gamble on California native Jared Goff
  • The Philadelphia Eagles draft QB Carson Wentz as No 2 overall pick
  • The Titans trade with the Browns at No 8 and select OT Jack Conklin
  • Denver trade with Seattle to take QB Paxton Lynch at No 26

There were few surprises with the first two picks of the NFL Draft, with quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz picked at No 1 and No 2.

California native Goff heads to the Los Angeles Rams as the new face of the franchise, while Wentz adds to the intriguing quarterback battle at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Without a winning season since 2003, the Rams gambled on the most NFL-ready quarterback in what is not considered a vintage class.

'I’m just very confident in myself. I turned around Cal football - had a lot of help doing it, but I had a big role in it,' Goff told Rams.com.

'I know it’s a completely different level and a lot of different stuff going on, but I’m just very confident in myself and my abilities.'

Meanwhile, a beaming Wentz - who was compared to Brett Favre by Eagles head coach Doug Pederson - was in equally jubilant form.

'It's an exciting time,' Wentz told NFL Network on stage. 'I'm pumped to be an Eagle and ready to go to work.'

Deion Sanders, no stranger to the passion of the Eagles faithful, asked how he would react to the fans.

'I'm bringing it,' Wentz said. 'They're getting a passionate player themselves. It's going to be fun.'

As with Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, the Heisman Trophy winners taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans in the first two picks twelve months ago, the two men will forever be inextricably linked.

After starting every game in three years, 21-year-old Goff steered the Bears to an underwhelming 8-5 season. At 6ft 4in, he threw for more than 4,700 yards but led the PAC-13 Conference in interceptions with 13.

Slight in build but with an accurate arm, Goff is expected to oust Case Keenum as the Rams starter sooner rather than later, despite head coach Jeff Fisher’s assertions otherwise.

Despite starting just 23 games in the FCS for North Dakota State, Wentz impressed in his two years of starting. He has large hands and his 6ft 6in frame is capable of strong running and solid throwing.

A leader, he steered the Bison to a fifth straight FCS championship, passing for 1,651 yards and 17 touchdowns during a senior year that was curtailed by a broken right wrist.

Wentz is seen as the man with the bigger upside, but the Rams are in win-now mode.

With a robust, near-the-knuckle defense and Offensive Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley, they need to endear themselves to the notoriously fussy Los Angeles audience. Fast.

Both the Rams and the Eagles paid hefty prices to secure their young quarterbacks.

In a showbiz move befitting of Hollywood, the newly-moved Rams mortgaged their immediate, moving to the top of the draft in a blockbuster trade with the Tennessee Titans earlier this month.

But their desperate desire to make an immediate impact in California saw them lose two second-round picks and a third-round pick this year and a first and third round pick in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Eagles also traded up prior to the draft in another blockbuster trade, swapping five picks with the Cleveland Browns to jump from No 8 to No 2 overall.

Twelve months ago both the Rams and the Eagles traded quarterbacks and were looking forward to seasons with Nick Foles and Sam Bradford under center. But neither impressed, and the latter recently requested a trade following the Eagles’ blockbuster move.

But now all eyes will be on the NFL's newest top-two quarterbacks to see if they can live up to the hype.
