Sadiq Khan wins London Election to become its first Muslim mayor beating Zac Goldsmith

Sadiq Khan was declared the first Muslim Mayor of London tonight after comfortably defeating Tory rival Zac Goldsmith. In a glimmer of light for Jeremy Corbyn from an otherwise dire set of election results, emerging results at City Hall made it clear there was no route to victory for Mr Goldsmith. The official declaration is due shortly but elections expert Michael Thrasher tonight declared the contest was over based on figures already released. The bitterly contested battle had seen Mr Goldsmith and David Cameron repeatedly raise Mr Khan's ties to extremists. But the interventions did not sway voters in the capital - and the Prime Minister is now facing a massive Conservative backlash over the tactics.

Jeremy Corbyn on borrowed time as Labour avoids heavy council election losses in England

Labour moderates including shadow Scottish secretary Ian Murray have criticised Jeremy Corbyn in the wake of the disastrous results, pointing out that the party showed no signs of mounting a realistic challenge to the Conservatives at the next general election. How new London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been dogged by links to extremists

London's first Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan (pictured with his wife inset Saadiya) is the proud son of a Pakistani bus driver who is so liberal he backed gay marriage and even launched his campaign in a pub. The Labour MP, 45, (pictured in his mother's arms and right on the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977) put tackling terrorism and 'rooting out its cancer' at the heart of his campaign and pledged to put the capital on a 'war-footing from day one'. He was helped into City Hall by Tory rival Zac Goldsmith's campaign, which was even branded 'racist' and 'outrageous' by his own party after he claimed Mr Khan's Labour team 'thinks terrorists are its friends'. But Mr Khan's career is littered with incidents where he has ended up sharing the platform with extremists and has been forced into a humbling apologies for giving the impression he shared their views. Despite this the father-of-two has himself suffered death threats from Islamists who hate him for being too liberal, especially because he voted for same-sex marriage.

KATIE HOPKINS: For Puck's sake, does the BBC have to turn EVERYTHING into a politically

Rewriting things rarely tends to improve them, and revisionist views should be reserved for the paranoid or power mad. Funnily enough, BBC programme commissioners are both. Which might help explain why the BBC have allowed Russell T Davies (inset) to re-write A Midsummers Night's Dream for 90 minute BBC One film starring Maxine Peake (left) which airs on Bank Holiday Weekend. The original play tells of four young loves, whose longing for each other is hampered by the meddling Puck, dispensing a love-potion at the direction of Oberon, the fairy king. But forget all that. The original play has been slung, unceremoniously out of the window of Broadcasting House, writes KATIE HOPKINS.
