Britain basked in the warmest May day for four years as temperatures soared to more than 27C - hotter than holiday haunts Tangier and Torremolinos. Sunday was the warmest day of the year so far - beating Saturday - with 27.1C recorded in St James's Park, central London. And the Met Office confirmed that was the warmest temperature recorded in Britain in May since 2012. Other hotspots on Sunday included Santon Downham in Suffolk and Northolt in north west London which saw the mercury soar to 26.6C (80F) shortly after 2pm. The temperatures were well ahead of those in Mediterranean holiday destinations such as Tangier in Morocco where the mercury limped to just 20C (68F). However, not everywhere in the UK was enjoying the sunshine with Inverness in Scotland recording a maximum of just 11.1C (52F).

Sir Tom Jones has been seen for the first time since the tragic death of his wife Linda last month.  The 75-year-old Welsh hitmaker looked smart and well put together as he stepped out his son Marc Woodward for an amble along a Santa Monica beach on Saturday. 

Kris Lyndsay, from St Austell in Cornwall, posed as a family man struggling to overcome the loss of his wife and daughter in a car crash when he met his victims via online dating websites. Lyndsay targeted his first victim, Anna Walczak, a Polish national working as a care assistant in Devon, just weeks after being released in December 2014. He was seen arriving at court with a new Polish girlfriend, whom he met on another dating website (top right). Lyndsay convinced Miss Walczak to invest £3,250 from the proceeds of selling her family's land into a fictitious nightclub, the court heard. He repaid £1,000 after the pair split last spring. Soon after, he persuaded mother-of-two Annemarie Fletcher (main), from Glastonbury, to part with a Cartier watch and diamond ring worth £40,000 by claiming he was having cash flow issues at work, pawning the jewellery for a tenth of its value. He has now been jailed for four years over what a judge called 'callous, manipulative and pre-meditated' lies.

Petra Ecclestone, 27, and her husband James Stunt, 34 (together left), have been the victims of a terrifying attack at their £66million home in Chelsea, London, after a lit petrol bomb was thrown into the property. Luckily, Petra, James and their three young children were not at home. Two men are understood to have been caught on CCTV running away afterwards. Police are now investigating why anyone would want to attack Petra or her husband, who runs a complicated web of companies involved in gold trading. Her father, Formula 1 tycoon Bernie, 85 (right), admitted he had looked into Stunt's background and finances before Petra married the businessman in a lavish Italian ceremony in 2011, but nothing he found gave him cause for concern. Stunt, 34, took delivery of a £3.1million Lamborghini in March (inset), to add to his cavalcade of Rolls-Royce Phantoms and Bentleys. His spokesman claims the attack is 'thought to be the action of a disaffected member of the public who disapproves of the Stunt's (sic) lifestyle'.

The two-year-old was clearly in high spirits as she and father Mike Tindall played in the sun while watching Zara, 34, compete in the jumping event at the Gloucestershire course. The boisterous toddler appeared to shriek with laughter as her 37-year-old dad lifted her up into the air as grandmother Princess Anne looked on. Police subsequently obtained a search warrant and raided the home of Bill Adams (left), 63, in a nearby village. Officers seized around 5,000 snowdrop bulbs from his end-of-terrace property, along with bluebells and wild garlic.

But Thomas Johnson, 19, walked free from court after he turned up at his sentencing hearing with a letter from his mother promising the court she would keep him under control. Police tried to pull over Johnson's Vauxhall Vectra in Ardwick at 1.15am on February 22 after noticing that that the exhaust seemed to be hanging off it. But instead of pulling over Johnson raced down Stockport Road - a 30mph zone - at 70mph.

The unidentified man had been accused of 'sodomy', according to local sources, and was punished for this supposed 'crime' by being thrown off a five-storey building in Manbij, Aleppo province. Pictures released by ISIS show the young man fall to his death in front of a large crowd, including dozens of children. They push the man off the building, after which his corpse is stoned by the baying mob in the streets below.

Former lapdancer Marie Buchan, 33, (pictured) from Selly Oak in Birmingham, has started working three days a week as a carer but admits she took the job in order to get past a benefits cap. Ms Buchan, who earns £7.50-an-hour in her new job as a carer, said: 'I'm going to have near enough everything paid. I'm not going to have to worry any more.' The single mother, who has been dubbed 'Octomum', works Friday, Saturday and Sunday while her ex-partner looks after their children. And although she will no longer receive £183-a-month in income support, because she is now in work the £600-a-month rent for the four bedroom house (bottom right) she lives in with her children will be paid for by the taxpayer.

The island where Princess Diana was buried and the lake surrounding it at the Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire (pictured) are to be redesigned to mark the 20th anniversary of her death next year. In 2014 Diana's former chef attacked her brother Earl Spencer for neglecting her final resting place, posting several photographs of the memorial on Twitter, showing the lake near her grave covered in algae. The island is located at the centre of the Spencer family's 500-year-old ancestral estate, which spans 13,000 acres surrounding its walled 500-acre park.

Amanda Wilkins, from Basingstoke, praised Morrisons' checkout worker Lin (left) after she played 'shop' with her daughter Holly who is registered blind and has autism. The mother took to Facebook to praise (right) the kind stranger for deciding to 'help instead of judge' and inspired thousands of other people to reveal how much acts of kindess mean to them. The post has now been liked more than 432,000 times and the supermarket has given Lin a bouquet and cheque in thanks.

Rahmat Sulemani was rushed to hospital after medics were called to his apartment in Dorset, but he died five days later. The 38-year-old had never found love again after the killing of his girlfriend Banaz Mahmod, who was murdered at the age of 20 when she walked out of an arranged marriage with a Kurdish man. Mr Sulemani once reportedly told police there was 'no life' for him after Banaz was strangled to death. Her body was put in a suitcase and taken to the Midlands before being buried in a make-shift grave in a Birmingham back-garden.

This series of fascinating composite images show the stark contrast between the London of World War Two during the Blitz and today. They were made to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Blitz in the capital on May 11, 2016 - although the campaign continued on other parts of the UK for another two weeks. The Blitz (from the German word, 'lightning') was the most intense bombing campaign Britain has ever seen.

Coastguards had to rush in after the tourists parked on a beach and were swamped by water, with three suffering the same fate in just 24 hours at Brean Downs, Somerset. The first to fall victim was a Honda 4x4 CR-V (bottom right), which can cost up to £32,000 new. Next was a BMW 3 Series, owned by a German businesswoman (top right), which sells for up to £26,000. Finally, and Audi A5 (top left), worth up to £29,000, was almost totally submerged (bottom right) by the water.
