Melissa George looks sensational in a flowing white gown with lace detailing as she saunters along the red carpet with beau Jean-David Blanc at Cannes Film Festival's gala opening night

She arrived on the French Riviera dressed down with her two young children earlier on Wednesday.

But Melissa George, 39, transformed into a glamorous blonde siren in the evening as she hit the red carpet for the Cannes Film Festival opening gala premiere with her partner Jean-David Blanc.

The actress looked sensational in a flowing white gown with floral lace detailing and a lengthy train which made quite the contrast with the red carpet.

The mother-of-two scraped her golden locks into a tidy ponytail which fell down the centre of her back. She decorated her eyes with intricately applied black eyeliner and her plump lips were given a slick of red matte lipstick.

She picked out a couple of statement items to accessorise her outfit with. An extravagant pair of dangly earrings glistened as she made her way along the runway and they matched a huge sparkler on her ring finger.

Melissa held her longtime partner Jean-David Blanc's hand as they walked together. The French entrepreneur was more than happy to let his girl steal the limelight, proudly leading her towards the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

Jean-David looked dapper in a traditional black suit complete with bow tie and a pair of circular specs. He sported some greying designer stubble and wore his short dark hair in a quiff style.

The film given the honour of being screened on the festival's opening night was Woody Allen's Café Society.

Speaking earlier at the festival, the famous director said he had no plans to retire despite being 80-year-old and the picture his 49th.

He explained: 'I'm 80 and I can't believe it! I'm so youthful, agile, nimble, spry, mentally alert that it's astonishing.'

Café Society, a romantic tale of 1930s Hollywood, is the third Allen film to open the festival, following Hollywood Ending in 2002 and Midnight in Paris in 2011.

'It's great but I don't feel old,' he said. 'Now I'm sure one day I'll wake up in the morning and I'll have a stroke ... and I'll be one of those people you see in a wheelchair and you'll say: "Remember him? He was Woody Allen."'

'Until it happens I was going to continue to make films as long as people are foolish enough to put up the money to support me.'

Man up in high waist trousers like Victoria Beckham

The Cannes Film Festival has begun so from now until a week on Sunday expect high octane glamour, South of France style.

And one of the first stars to make an appearance this year is our very own Victoria Beckham who eschewed the usual over the top gowns in favour of a sleek and chic look from her AW16 collection.

This makes a nice change and believe us over the next few days you'll be seeing a lot of glitz, so a pared back take on red carpet dressing like this is just what the style doctor ordered. A well tailored pair of trousers is a wardrobe essential so if you haven't invested yet then make VB your muse.

We love the high waist and button detail on these wide leg pants and recreating the look in the real world is easier than you might think. Check out the options in our edit below. From Proenza Schouler to Rare London there's a pair for every budget.
