BBC stars earning less than £450,000-a-year will keep their pay deals secret

Culture secretary John Whittingdale today unveiled the Government's White Paper on the corporation's future and said the BBC must end their obsession with 'chasing ratings'. It says bosses should show the 'creative ambition' to make more shows like Strictly (bottom left), Doctor Who (bottom middle) and dramas like War and Peace (bottom right), rather than long-running staples like Bargain Hunt (top left) - now in its 43rd series - Homes Under the Hammer (top, middle) and Escape to the Country (top right). These three programmes could be shelved in favour of more 'distinctive' news, arts or music output - and because there are similar shows on other channels. It came as Mr Whittingdale said the BBC in its current form is 'not fit for purpose' and blasted 'left wing luvvies' for 'ill founded hysterical speculation' about his reforms.

It's not yet clear how Culture Secretary John Whittingdale's plans will work out. But Auntie Beeb appears to have been given everything she could have hoped for and more, writes TOM UTLEY.

Keeping a tight grip! George Clooney lovingly grasps wife Amal's hand as they leave Cannes

He may be the Hollywood superstar in the relationship but George Clooney's wife Amal once again proved she could easily be an A-list star in her own right on Thursday evening. However, although the human rights lawyer cut an incredibly dazzling figure on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of George's new film Money Monster, she clearly struggled with the long length of her flowing gown. So it's no surprise that later in the evening, as the smitten pair left the premiere's official after party in nearby Antibes, the 55-year-old actor clung tightly to his wife's hand.

A man sits at the Abdullah Shah Ashabi Sufi shrine in Thatta district, in Pakistan's Sindh province, November 24, 2011. Many Pakistanis think their sufferings are inflicted by evil spirits intent on destroying marriage prospects, businesses and health, and that only Sufi saints can help. It is a risky belief in Pakistan as militants, including the al Qaeda-linked Taliban, have over the years bombed Sufi shrines which they consider heretical. But fears of possession, and life's many challenges, keep driving people back to the shrines. Picture taken November 24, 2011. KATIE HOPKINS says Nicola Thorp's bosses should be able to tell staff to wear whatever

We are a nation under threat of a terror attack. The NHS is in crisis. But it turns out the big question facing us is should women have to wear heels at work, writes KATIE HOPKINS. Brilliant! Focus at its finest. Call Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and get me some podiatry police. Thanks to 100,000 muppets signing another blasted petition started by a woman (Nicola Thorp, left) sent home from a temp job for not wearing heels, Parliament is obliged to respond. She says she is an actor. I understand this to be code for receptionist, whether that's in PwC or KFC. I should confess. I am not one for a heel. With every year that passes, my love for them fades. Happily I am my own master, and have reached a point in my career where the shoe on my foot no longer represents me, my mighty mouth or the organisations good enough to employ me.

Nicola Thorp's campaign to make it illegal for high heels to be compulsory in the workplace gets my vote, but I think we should be honest about what's really going on here, writes JAN MOIR.

The Mäanderhöhle cave near Bamberg was previously regarded as an archaeological sensation. It was thought to contain some of the oldest cave art in Germany. However, Julia Blumenröther, a former student at FAU?s Institute of Prehistory and Early History, has demonstrated in her Master?s thesis that the markings discovered inside the cave in 2005 are not fertility symbols carved by humans as previously thought. In fact, these lines occurred as a result of natural processes, the archaeologist says.
One of the caverns in the 75-metre long cave is full of spherical deposits of minerals known as cave clouds that form on rocks in a similar way to stalactites and stalagmites. In 2005, cave researchers discovered a large number of lines that looked like they could have been made by humans on the rock-hard surface of these cave clouds. An archaeologist studied these lines several years later and published his interpre
