Amy Winehouse looks the picture of health and happiness in a collection of previously unreleased photographs

She was widely-recognised as one of the greatest female solo singer-songwriters of her generation.

And while Amy Winehouse's battles with substance abuse were well-documented, a collection of previously unseen photos taken before the release of her album Frank in 2003 show the star looking vivacious.

The relaxed images of the singer were taken by photographer Charles Moriarty during sessions in London and New York and capture her vibrant personality as she models in everyday settings.

Sporting her trademark beehive hairstyle, Amy can be seen smiling brightly while wearing a black Dirty Dancing t-shirt emblazoned with a picture of Patrick Swayze.

The soulful crooner looked fresh-faced with a radiant glow to her cheeks and her distinctive Monroe piercing was visible above her top lip.

In another, she sat atop a large tumble dryer in a summery yellow cropped vest top and a Pop-Art style miniskirt.

She gave her lips a slick of bold red lipstick which matched her vibrant manicure and laughed out loud as Charles snapped away.

Often pictured with heavy make-up during her career, one of the images shows Amy carefully applying bright pink lipstick while wearing purple lightning bolt earrings and a fluorescent top.

In an interview with Dazed, Moriarty opened up about his experiencing of shooting the star.

He said: 'She was great, uncomplicated, honest and self-assured while also being a little nervous, I think we both were.

'I think the Amy in these pictures is both the girl and the Icon, at times you see her fun side, her youth, but there are moments when, all of a sudden you see Amy Winehouse, and the girl is gone. I think these images in some ways are extremely personal, she is true to herself in them. It’s honest to the core.'

Moriarty set up a Kickstarter page to raise £15,000 so that he could publish the collection, called Before Frank, of 50-60 images. The target has already been surpassed by more than £3,000.
