Emoji Candidates
The Unicode Technical Committee (UTC) has accepted the following 79 characters as candidates for emoji. At the 2016Q2 UTC meeting, a final determination will be made for ones to be added to Unicode 9.0, for release in June, 2016. The candidates for 9.0 are limited to those accepted in 2015.
The ones accepted in 2016 are candidates for Unicode 10.0, for release in June, 2017. For more information on the timeline, see Process and Timeline. For information on the format of this chart, see the notes.
- Do not deploy any of these yet: they are not yet final!
- Candidates may still be removed or their code point, glyph, or name changed.
For information about the images used in these charts, see Emoji Images and Rights. For details about the format and fields, see Emoji Chart Index and UTR #51 Unicode Emoji. See also Submitting Emoji Character Proposals.

Notes
These candidates were based on proposals received by the Emoji Subcommittee and Unicode members, and selected on the basis of the Emoji Selection Factors in Submitting Emoji Character Proposals. Anyone can file a proposal for a new emoji: see the instructions there.
- The cell-divisions (like face-happy) are as in Emoji Ordering.
- All of the images are only for illustration.
- The draft black and white Chart Glyphs are drafts for the Unicode charts. They may change. These drafts are courtesy of Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, and proposers (2016Q1 images from Yiying Lu and Maximilian Merz).
- The Sample Colored Glyphs column use a variety of different styles to illustrate some possible presentations. However, the actual presentations on phones and other devices are up to vendors, subject to the considerations in UTR #51 Unicode Emoji. These samples are courtesy of EmojiXpress, Emojipedia.org, and proposers (2016Q1 images from Yiying Lu and Maximilian Merz).
- The Date column indicates the UTC meeting where each was accepted as a candidate.
- The EMP column has P when the draft Emoji_Presentation property specifies that the presentation should be colorful by default.
- The EMB column has B when the draft Emoji_Modifier_Base property specifies that the emoji can be used with a skin-tone modifier.
- The Name column has the draft Unicode name. The bulleted items below the name are clarifications or comments. Some of these may end up being reflected in Unicode chart annotations.
- The Category, such as Faces, is used as a basic grouping for later generation of the emoji sort order in CLDR. There is a superscript ¹ on the characters that are not candidates for the upcoming release.
