Does ANYONE look stylish in Stella McCartney's (very expensive) clothes? And, what's more, they don't even look good on her!
We've all been there: nipping out to run errands looking less than our best, hoping we won’t bump into anyone we know.
So women will have some sympathy with Stella McCartney who was photographed in London recently with unbrushed hair and a face devoid of make-up.
She’s a working mum-of-four, admittedly — but when you’re at the helm of an international fashion label that bears your name, is there any excuse for stepping out in trousers that look as if they’re borrowed from a school caretaker’s cupboard?
Who’s the joker? The £1,300 print of Cara Delevingne’s SuperStellaHeroes all-in-one makes her look more children’s entertainer than top model
Floral frenzy: Kirsten Dunst (left) looks like one of the Von Trapp children in an outfit surely whipped up from a pair of curtains. Top, £310, and shorts, £625. Taking a plunge: Model Suki Waterhouse (right) looks as if she’s gone out in a bin bag. Stella ‘flatform’ shoes, £660, and jumpsuit, £1,520
Horsing around: Pop star Ellie Goulding wears a £460 equine print top and £445 crepe pants — but even the slender songstress looks out of shape in the saggy joggerstyle pants
The 44-year-old designer, who graduated from prestigious Central Saint Martins art school and honed her skills in London’s Savile Row, must surely be able to get even her off-duty clothes fitted to flatter. Yet, time after time, even when she’s dressing to be on public parade at a glamorous awards ceremony, Stella appears to opt for outfits that do anything but.
Her early collections showed a sharp eye for elegant, feminine tailoring, while her exquisitely ladylike trouser suits were bought by female executives in multiples.
In recent years, however, Stella seems to have gone through an ‘experimentation’ period — with some truly terrible results.
There have been voluminous tops and dresses that create the illusion of hunched shoulders or a protruding belly, even on those with the most slender silhouettes.
Trousers have boasted bulky ruching details that add excess fabric, meaning even the most coltish limbs look heavy.
Nonetheless, the number of gorgeous women lining up to be seen in Stella’s somewhat eccentric clothes grows. From members of the designer’s social circle, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler, Cara Delevingne and Madonna, to celebrities keen to add a little edge to their wardrobe, including Katherine Jenkins and actress Lily Collins, we can’t help but wonder if they’ve been dazzled by the label.
Red alert: Kristen Stewart’s satin jumpsuit — worth £4,995 — worn to the 2013 New York Met Gala, features too-short trousers that give the actress a strange silhouette
Stitched up: Actress Lily Collins, left, struggles to carry off a bomber jacket dress (£2,190) , worn with Stella’s signature flatforms. Maxi mishap: Even Cara’s model sister Poppy, right, can’t make this cutaway dress (£1,705) look flattering at a Stella McCartney Fashion Week party
Stripe a light! Singer Rita Ora is known for her flamboyant outfits — but this Stella top (worth £575) and trousers (£625) look like a zebra crossing
These are women who would normally look good in a bin bag, but when the likes of Hollywood’s Kirsten Dunst and model Suki Waterhouse struggle to wear a look with aplomb, we wonder how well it will work on us mere mortals.
Thankfully, this summer, Stella has got her style mojo back, with a covetable collection of embroidered shift dresses and sleekly tailored coats, as worn by American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and destined to enhance the female body in all its forms. The sooner we forget about these past hiccups, the better.
They don't even look good on her!
Shapeless: Stella’s voluminous drop-waist dress (£1,110) does nothing for her figure
Caretaker chic? She may be off-duty, but the workmanstyle trousers (£495) are inexcusable for a designer with seamstresses on tap
Totally polka dotty: Showing she’s not afraid of a bold look, Stella wears a £1,150 jumpsuit and £1,265 matching bomber jacket at her Spring 2015 show
Blizzard of spots: A zip-front top (worth £660) and matching trousers (£500) for the opening of the Anna Wintour Costume Centre in New York
