'It's like eating a watermelon and saying 'I love African-Americans'': Jeb Bush likens Trump's 'insulting' taco Tweet to outright racism
- On May 5 Trump shared a pic of himself eating Tacos, with the caption 'I love Hispanics!'
- Bush called the tweet 'insensitive' and an 'insult'
- He also said he didn't know if the Republican party would survive Trump
- 'If we lose in November, we Republicans have ourselves to blame,' he said
Jeb Bush has likened Donald Trump's infamous taco Tweet to outright racism in one of his first interviews since he stepped down from the presidential race.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, he said that the Tweet - in which The Donald posed with a taco bowl with the caption 'Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!' - was an 'insult.'
'It's like eating a watermelon and saying 'I love African-Americans,'' he said, according to The Huffington Post, which was given an English transcript of the interview.
'Insulting': Donald Trump's Tweet (pictured) in which he ate a taco bowl with the caption 'I love Hispanics!' was derided as 'insulting' and 'insensitive' by Jeb Bush, who dropped out of the presidential race in February
Blame: Bush (pictured here announcing his campaign's suspension on Feb 20) said he was 'uncertain' if the Republican Party would survive Trump, and that if they lose in November 'we have ourselves to blame'
'First, not all Hispanics are Mexican,' he explained in the article, which was published Saturday in Dutch.
'Secondly, not all Hispanics eat tacos. Thirdly, showing your sensitivity by eating an American dish is the most insensitive thing you can do.
'Fourthly, to say this, next to all things he already said, is a further insult.'
'This guy... 'If we lose in November, we Republicans have ourselves to blame.'
The former Florida governor also told the paper it was 'uncertain' whether the Republican Party would survive Trump's selection to be its presidential candidate.
'Parties no longer stand for anything, but become a vehicle for the ambitions of their leaders,' he said. 'Politics becomes a personality show.'
The interview came ahead of Bush's upcoming talk on democracy at the Nexus Institute, a political discussion forum, on Saturday.
It was, NRC Hendelsblad said, Bush's first full-length interview since he quit the presidential campaign on February 20.
Trump posted the Tweet on May 5, earning jabs from the Clinton campaign, which Tweeted his 'I love Hispanics' remark alongside a quote saying 'They're gonna be deported,' from the day before.
He was also the subject of memes and mockery by web users.
But Trump defended his remarks on Fox & Friends, saying that the Tweet had been retweeted 59,000 times shortly after it was posted.
'That's almost got to be some kind of a record. People loved it,' he told the hosts. 'And you know what, I'm going to do great with the Hispanics.'
