He's best known for playing antihero Jack Bauer.

The show sees Kiefer star as Tom Kirkman, a low-level cabinet member who becomes the President of the United States following a devastating attack on Washington during the State of the Union.

'What the hell am I doing here? I’m not the guy for this,' Tom says before being sworn in following the deaths of the President and members of Congress.

And Tom is not the only one who doubts his abilities.

During a conversation between a group of White House employees, one of them says: 'The guy’s never been elected to anything.'

Another person added: 'Did you know President Richmond fired him this morning? Now he’s the President.'

Kal Penn's character Seth then says: ' Maybe he’ll realise he has no business running the country.'

But when he later expresses to Tom that he thinks the unlikely President should step down, he doesn't exactly get the reaction he is hoping for.

'You may be right, but for now I’m all you got,' Tom points out.

Tom is also seen clashing with the head of the military over whether or not to wage war in light of the attack on US soil.

'We are going to do this my way. If it doesn’t work we’ll try yours,' he says, refusing to back down without a fight.

Someone off-camera is heard stating: 'We’re in a state of war. Tom Kirkman is not going to get us through this.'

But someone who promises she is on his side is his wife Jessica, portrayed by Natascha McElhone.

The father-of-two's son is also seen reassuring his young little sister that 'Dad’s not scared of anything,' which it seems gives Tom some more courage to lead the country.

And it looks as though he is going to need it, because it appears the attackers are not yet done.

At the end of the trailer, Tom is shown being sworn into office, promising: 'I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States so help me God.'

Deadline reported earlier this month that ABC had decided to green light an entire first season of the show due to its strong pilot.

The series, which will mark Kiefer's time back on a series since 2014's 24: Live Another Day, debuts later this year.
