ANOTHER poll has Trump beating Hillary if the election was held today: Republican presumptive nominee closes gap on Clinton across the country, but voters think they both have flawed characters

  • Fox News asked voters how they would decide if election took place today
  • Results show Trump has a slim lead of three points over the Democrat
  • It is a turnaround for Trump who is now closing the gap in national polls
  • The majority of voters did say both candidates had flawed morals
  • They also believe the rivals would say anything to get themselves elected

Donald Trump would beat Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical match-up, according to a Fox News poll.

Voters were asked about how they would decide between the two candidates if the general election was held today.

The results showed the Republican frontrunner has 45 percent, while the Democrat has 42 per cent.

But those who took part agreed both candidates had flawed morals and would say anything to get elected.

Furthermore Trump would lose if he were to take on Bernie Sanders in an election today, as the Vermont senator has a four point lead over the millionaire.

It is a turn of events as last month, in a similar poll, the former Secretary of State was up by six months.

Trump is also managing to close the gap in other national polls as the party conventions draw closer.

A NBC poll released earlier this week said he had gained two points in seven days on Hillary, closing the gap to just three.

Trump has already closed to within the margin of error in a Reuters poll.

According to the Fox News poll, Clinton is ahead by 14 points among women (50-36 percent). Yet Trump leads by a larger 22 points among men (55-33 percent).

Trump is ahead in the white vote, but Hillary has the advantage by a huge margin among blacks and Hispanics.

Independents go for Trump by 46-30 percent, although one in five would vote for someone else or stay home, the results of the Fox poll said.

Trump is already the presumptive nominee for his party, with all the other candidates dropping out of the race.

The results showed the Republican frontrunner has 45 percent, while the Democrat has 42 per cent. But those who took part agreed both candidates had flawed morals and would say anything to get elected.

But Clinton is still facing an uphill challenge to clinch the spot for the Democrats after a primary loss in Oregon and a close race in Kentucky on Tuesday night.

The poll suggested that if the battle for the nomination was drawn out, then Sanders' supporters would back Trump instead of Clinton.

Clinton has a net negative honesty rating of -35 points. A new low of 31 percent say she's honest, while a record 66 percent say she isn't.

Only 40 percent however think Trump is honest.

In addition, over half say the phrase 'has strong moral values' does not describe Clinton or Trump.
