The sizzling 68-year-old was looking fantastic in a smart black trouser suit, white blouse and stack-heeled boots as she drank up the acclaim at the thrilling event.

The excited actress said the honour was an 'unspeakable thrill,' an understandable response to being the latest name to appear alongside on the trail alongside the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Soap queen Deirdre was given a raft of awards during her 40 year spell on the smash hit show, at one point being given the chop in 2009 due to budget cuts before making a triumphant return two years later.

Among her most prized gongs are the three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress she received in 1984, 1985, and 1995.

She was also nominated for an Emmy in 1980, 1984 and 1985, but suffered the agony of losing out every time.

Her character Dr Marlena Evans was subjected to some of the most ludicrous storylines, even by soap standards, of all time.

She was possessed by the devil, survived falling from a 30-story-window, was a surrogate for genetically engineered babies during a four-year coma and was even mind-controlled to believe she was a serial killer.

Her character, who was also kidnapped numerous times over the years, still managed to fit in time for a medical career, as well as being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She admitted working in soaps was not the easiest of professions, saying: ' “It’s the hardest job there is because of the pace, but those of us who work at this pace think, "If I did film, I’d shoot myself! I can’t read that many magazines." We thrive on it.'

Deidre began her TV career in the early 70s, and appeared in shows such as Night Gallery, “The Streets of San Francisco and Emergency.

Even more excitingly, she starred as Electra Woman in the Saturday morning series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl for a yer until 1977, and also joined Days of our Lives in 1976.
