Hot - or not? With stars like Kristen Stewart and Lucy Hale turning heads with their RED eyeshadow, top make-up artists share their pro tips for pulling off the intimidating hue

Red is the new black, or so says celebrity make-up artist Katie Lee who gave Kristen Stewart, 26, a head-turning red smoky eye look at Cannes Film Festival earlier this week.

The ruby red halo added an edge to an otherwise ultra-feminine Chanel outfit and in true K-Stew fashion, an air of irreverence to an otherwise stuffy event.

Actress Lucy Hale has also taken the daring hue out for a spin recently, but in a softer, slightly more refined way. At a party for Nylon magazine this month, the Pretty Little Liars star wore a haze of cranberry shadow around her eyes to complement the rose detail on her Sachin & Babi mini dress.

'Lucy is always down to try new things and take some risks,' make-up artist Kelsey Deenihan, who created the look, told FEMAIL. 'We thought bringing in rose and cranberry colored shadows was the perfect opportunity to play off the dress.'

Other celebrities who have rocked a red eye in recent months are Olivia Wilde, 32, Lupita Nyong'o, 33, and Selena Gomez, 23.

But can the dramatic trend work off of the matching carpet?

'Wearing red eyeshadow may seem intimidating but it doesn’t have to!' promised Kelsey. 'Just keep a couple of things in mind when choosing the right shade for you.'

First, look to your skintone.

Celebrity make-up artist Suzy Gerstein told FEMAIL that mahogany and cinnamon hues are great for dark skintones, while russet and saffron shades work well on medium tones. For pale complexions, she recommends opting for blue-based reds.

While as Kristen demonstrated at Cannes, matte red eyeshadow can certainly look cool, Kelsey said that the finish 'runs the risk of emulating irritated skin, which is what you're trying to avoid'.

A more flattering choice then, might be a product with a satin finish or a hint of shimmer. 'The light will catch the sheen and automatically create dimension in the shadow,' she said.

Don't feel like buying another product? Use a red lipstick you already have at home!

'Take a small eyeshadow brush and run it along your lipstick and then apply it around your lash line or use it as a cream shadow and blend it over the lid,' said Kelsey.

And if these colors sound daunting to you, try easing into the trend with a shimmery peach shadow.

Before application, pro make-up artist Azra Red suggests prepping eyes with a primer.

'This is going to neutralize any discoloration on the lids as red shades can make the area look blotchy and like you have pink eye,' she said.

HOW TO WEAR RED EYESHADOW: A CHEAT SHEET

-Blue-based red tones are great for fair skintones, while russet and saffron shades work well on medium complexions

-Dark skintones can pull off bright reds or rich hues like mahogany and cinnamon

- Because red eyeshadow will highlight any areas of redness on the face such as blemishes, make sure skin looks flawless

- Pair the shadow with smudgy black eyeliner and lots of mascara, plus muted neutral tones on the lips and cheeks

Suzy recommends using eye drops and lining the inner rims of the eyes with a beige pencil to 'erase any redness that can take the look from chic to bunny rabbit before you can blink'.

Azra is a fan of pairing red shadow with a black smudged eyeliner for a 'striking smoky look', while Suzy encourages applying 'lots of black mascara'.

As for the rest of the face, keep it flawless and neutral.

'Any little bits of redness or blemishes elsewhere on the skin will become magnified by the color on your lids,' warned Suzy, who also advises wearing monochromatic, muted tones like peach or beige on the cheeks and lips.

Finish the look by applying highlighter on cheekbones, brow bones and along the bridge of your nose. Suzy and FEMAIL are currently obsessed with Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish 0003 kit
