You must be dough-nuts! Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond appear to mock Chris Evans' Top Gear as they mimic controversial wheel spins for new show

They've never shied away from a bit of controversy.

And Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond appeared to be at it again as they performed a controversial doughnut trick while filming for their new Amazon show on Thursday.

The stunt caused problems for rival show, Top Gear, earlier in the year when Matt LeBlanc enraged the public by doing wheel spins around the Cenotaph.

So it's perhaps no surprise that Clarkson and Hammond decided to film the trick while out in the fields of Devon and Somerset.

The new show will be called 'The Grand Tour' and will feature all three of the original Top Gear hosts, including James May, when it airs this autumn.

And despite the drama surrounding their departure from the original BBC driving show around 18 months ago, the team looked relaxed while preparing for their comeback.

Jeremy, 56, cut a relaxed figure in a pair of faded jeans and a slouchy white pull-over, which he layered of a baby blue t-shirt.

Meanwhile, Richard looked suitably smarter in a sharp coordinating jacket and waistcoat, which he dressed down with a pair of indigo jeans.

The 46-year-old rounded off his country-chic style with a crisp white shirt and some tan cowboy boots.

But despite their low-key looks, the men refused to shy away from the spotlight as they rode around in an eye-catching blue and red Fords, which they raucously span around until they caused enormous dust clouds.

In March, Chris Evans was forced to apologise 'unreservedly' for Top Gear pulling a similar stunt when Matt LeBlanc was filmed doing doughnut wheelspins next to the Cenotaph.

The broadcaster used his BBC Radio 2 show this morning to try to quell mounting anger about Sunday's sequence as filming for the new series of the BBC Two show, which is due to air in May, hit another crisis.

Evans, who took over presenting the show after Clarkson was sacked for hitting a producer, said: 'On behalf of the Top Gear team and Matt I would like to apologise unreservedly for what these images seem to portray.

'There's been some very incendiary comments involved and written alongside these pictures and I completely understand all this furore', but in attempt to distance himself from the stunt he added: 'This isn't a shoot I'm particularly involved in'.

Politicians and a former Army chief quickly condemned the BBC for arranging the 'gravely disrespectful' sequence yards from Britain's main war memorial.

Colonel Richard Kemp, a retired commander of British forces in Afghanistan, said: 'It beggars belief that they were ever allowed to film here. This is a sacred tribute to millions of people who have done far more for their country than [show hosts] Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc ever will.'
