Too busty to work-out? Gym-goer kicked out because her breasts were 'too big for her tank top'

  • Jenna Vecchio was called out by Movati Athletic Club for her attire
  • The Ontario resident said employees called her racerback tank top 'inappropriate', though plenty of women there were wearing similar tops
  • There are also women in tank tops on the company's website, but Jenna thinks she was discriminated against because of her large chest
  • Movati Athletic Club stands by its decision and insists the outfit was immodest

A Canadian woman has sparked outrage after accusing a local gym of discriminating against her because of her chest size.

Jenna Vecchio is a member of the Movati Athletic Club in Orleans, Ontario. In great shape, the young woman seems to hit the gym often — but may not go back to this one in the future after employees called her out on her attire.

So what was the 'offensive' outfit that she was told was off-limits? A black racerback tank top that she wore over full-length leggings, which was no different from the tank tops worn by several other women at the gym that day.

Jenna, who goes by Rose Nickels on Facebook, insists that she was singled out because her breasts are large, and that supervisors at the gym even confirmed that was the case.

In an angry Facebook post she shared on Saturday, she wrote that she was 'instructed by a Supervisor at the club that my tank top was inappropriate dress and is offensive to both the staff and other members'.

She said that told her that 'at Movati, they have a dress code stating only appropriate gym attire and modest clothing is to be worn'.

However, Jenna went on, she was hardly the only woman at the club that day wearing a tank top. In fact, there are also several images of women on the club's website wearing similar tops.

The problem seemed to be that her chest appeared to be 'much larger' that most of these other women, especially in comparison to her slim frame.

'After asking every woman at the club who I could find on the way out if my attire offended them and they responded no, it became clear that the only ones offended were the two women supervisors working at the club today,' she explained. 'I pointed out to them that my shirt was no different than any other woman's shirt. They informed me that it did not matter that due to my chest size I could not wear a tank top.'

Rose said she felt 'humiliated' and 'discriminated against' after being singled out, and doesn't understand how there could be different rules for different figures.

She was also puzzled by the alleged dress code that the gym claimed to have, so decided to do some more research. She said she was unable to turn up any dress code on the website or in the gym, other than a vague sign that said: 'Members are required to wear modest athletic attire and appropriate shoes at all times'.

Since her post has gone up, supporters have left horrified comments criticizing the gym and applauding Rose for speaking up for herself.

Several have also taken to the gym's Facebook page, tanking its rating with a series of one-star reviews.

Despite the public outrage, though, Movati stands by its employees' decision to tell Rose that her outfit was inappropriate. Though they regret that she had a 'negative experience', they insist that her attire was immodest.

'While it may not have been intentional, Ms. Vecchio’s attire was not as modest ... and caused multiple members to feel uncomfortable and voice their concerns to our staff,' they said in a statement to BuzzFeed.

'Following Ms. Vecchio’s own social media postings on this matter, we conducted a thorough investigation which included first-hand accounts from members and other staff, and a follow-up meeting with Jenna herself, who seemed to leave the facility feeling as though she had expressed her position.

Semantics: They also said it wasn't the shirt that was inappropriate, but the lack of coverage — though those seem to be the same thing

'Upon conclusion of our interviews, we stand by the original decision that confirms that Ms. Vecchio was dressed inconsistently with our code of conduct.

'The Movati staff never indicated Ms. Vecchio’s style of shirt was not appropriate — it was the lack of coverage that was the issue as she exercised adjacent to other members. While in no way did we mean to embarrass Ms. Vecchio, we did feel it necessary to address the situation with her due to member discomfort.

'While it is unfortunate that Ms. Vecchio felt she had a negative experience, it was certainly not Movati’s intent,' they concluded.
