The case of Amanda Lewis, 35, was featured in Piers Morgan's new ITV show Killer Women, which aired last night.

Mail Online's US editor-at-large spent an hour interviewing the Florida mother who still denies deliberately drowning her seven-year-old daughter Adrianna in the pool at their home.

And viewers took to Twitter to say they were 'heartbroken' and in tears as they saw AJ break down while giving evidence against his mother in court.

And although viewers were left divided over her proclamations of innocence they were united in their heartbreak for AJ.

The boy was the only witness to the crime and in court the prosecutor asked him to explain a drawing he'd done showing stick figures around the pool.

‘That’s my momma,’ he explained . ‘Killing my sister.’

When the prosecutor asked how she was doing it, AJ replied: 'Putting her hand over her face.'

He added that he'd written 'too bad' on the drawing 'because it's scary'.

At first, the youngster did not even recognise his mother when he saw her in court.

When asked where his mother was, he replied that she was in jail.

But when he did realise she was sitting in front of him in the court room, the clearly confused and overwhelmed youngster burst into tears.

Viewers were moved by the youngster's display of emotion with EvieEmpress admitting it had left her in tears.

'I actually cried when that little boy realised his mum was in court and started crying,' she said.

Mollykilbey added: 'AJ crying in court absolutely broke my heart. Poor baby.'

Kirstyf27 said she felt 'so sorry' for AJ, while Kiéra Needham ‏was devastated by the thought of what he'd witnessed.

'That poor little boy having to see that,' she said.

Georgia Williams was saddened to see such a young boy forced to give evidence in court.

'That poor little boy,' she said. 'Imagine having to do that at seven years old.'

Natalie Billing added: 'Killer Women is so good. That poor little guy AJ, so heart breaking.'

Mattycampbell44 was totally convinced by AJ's testimony, saying: 'That little boy interview. No way he is capable of lying. She is evil.'

However, viewers were left divided as to Amanda's guilt.

Bectoriahh tweeted: Can't decide if this woman on Killer Women is innocent or guilty, I can't believe they decided her fate on the testimony of a child.'

Kayleigh Osborne ‏agreed with her, saying: 'How can a person be sentenced to life based on the testimony of a seven-year-old who didn't recognise his own mother in the court room.'

There was no doubt in the mind of Candy Ferlance ‏however.

'That evil woman is clearly guilty of drowning her daughter,' she said. 'She didn't even shed a tear! Shameful.'

In court, Amanda's mother testified that her daughter often lost her temper with Adrianna, who suffered from ADHD.

However, AJ’s testimony was riddled with inconsistencies and the verdict led Lewis’s defence lawyer to quit the profession, saying it was the biggest miscarriage of justice he'd ever been involved with.

Although viewers were sympathetic to AJ some were not sure that his mother had actually killed Adrianna

And Piers himself has admitted that after spending an hour with Amanda at her prison he too was left confused.

'I still don’t know if she did it or not,' he said. 'Viewers, I suspect, will be equally torn.Amanda told Piers her daughter's death was an accident.'

Speaking to Piers Amanda gave her own version of the events that occurred on the day her daughter died.

'We had went outside. The kids were playing,' she explained. 'I had to step back inside. Somewhere along the point she had pulled the wagon by the pool. Somewhere along the line she fell in.

'Adrianna was playing in the pool. I looked out the back door and that's when I can barely see her floating in the pool.'

Describing how she felt when her daughter died she said: 'It was like part of me was gone. It was part I'd never be able to get back. To me my kids they made my world. They made me a stronger person. They made me feel like I was everything I was supposed to be.'

Women Who Kill sees Piers Morgan travel across the US to meet some of America's most notorious female murderers in a quest to discover what drove them to take another life.

Writing for Mail Online ahead of the series, Piers explained that when Amanda was 17 she'd lost a 6-month-old son to a form of cot death - a fact discovered by police while investigating her daughter's death.

'There was no evidence that this was anything but a tragic accident, yet from speaking to the policemen involved, it was clear to me that they decided early on she was a serial child killer,' he said.

'Perhaps that’s true. But if it isn’t – and having met her and grilled her, I still can’t decide where I think the truth lies – then you’re left with a woman who lost a baby son, then a seven-year-old daughter, and will never again see her other son, now aged 15.

'Of all three women, Lewis looked the most broken and beaten by what had happened.'

He also met with Erin Caffey, 24, who at 16 masterminded the killing of her entire family along with three accomplices, her boyfriend Charlie Wilkinson, 18, his best friend Charles Waid, 20, and Waid’s girlfriend Bobbi Johnson, 18.

The only motive appeared to be that her parents had told Erin to stop seeing Charlie after they stumbled across his MySpace social media page, which revealed drinking and sexual exploits.

He also interviewed Rhonda Glover, a former Texas beauty queen and cowgirl, who for weeks carefully planned the murder of her long-term lover, an oil baron.

She lured him to the house they once shared and shot him ten times at point-blank range.
