Class is in session! School children of new Archie Comics-inspired CW show Riverdale are unveiled in new show still

It has been called in to make a midseason debut.

And the cast of CW's new high school drama Riverdale looked like they could hardly wait to get started in a new still released on Thursday.

And it seems like the Archie Comics-inspired show is also taking cues from real life, as one of the main characters is bedding one of his teachers as the story begins.

Wannabe musician Archie Andrews, played by series star KJ Apa, starts the series in a disappointed mood after his affair with his music teacher Geraldine Grundy comes to an abrupt end.

Unlike the comics Ms Grundy is not an older woman, but a feisty tutor in her early thirties, who is played by sexy actress Sarah Habel, who previously appeared in TV shows Rush and Underemployed.

However the larger plot point carrying the show is how the town of Riverdale is coming to terms with the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom.

Indeed it is this turn of events that makes Archie decide he is going to attempt to launch a music career, rather than following in the footsteps of his more conventional father.

Other storylines thickening the intrigue include the crush girl-next-door Betty Cooper, who is played by Lili Reinhart, has on Archie, and whether they will ever get together.

And it seems a love triangle could be in the offing, as new girl  Veronica Lodge, who has just moved to the town from New York, his undeniable chemistry with the show's star, but does not want to ruin her fledgling friendship with Betty by taking things further.

Other young hopefuls starring in the new show include , Camila Mendes as Veronica, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones and Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy. 

Beverly Hill 90210 star Luke Perry returns to his roots as Archie's  father Fred Andrews while Madelaine Petsch plays Cheryl Blossom, and Ross Butler features as Reggie Mantle.

Riverdale is set to premiere on The CW in the winter.
