'Emma is as much use as t*** on a fish': Contestant on TV show The Chase provokes Twitter fury after sacrificing £3,000 of her team’s prize fund

  • Angry Twitter users slam The Chase contestant for sacrificing prize money
  • History student Emma cut prize fund by £3,000 to make her round easier
  • Confessed she didn't feel confident enough to go head-to-head with Chaser
  • Made the controversial decision despite pleas against it from teammates

TV quiz show The Chase has once again provoked Twitter users into a frenzy, after an unwitting student sacrificed a chunk of the team's prize fund to give herself a fighting chance against the Chaser.

History student Emma took an offer of minus £3,000 from Chaser Anne Hegarty, despite the pleas of her teammates not to lose them the money.

Emma took the offer to sacrifice the money in order to start two steps ahead of the Chaser. She could also have taken £5,000 to start just one step ahead, or played for £38,000 to start the quiz level pegging with the Chaser.

Her teammates Gail and Andrew both begged her to take the £5,000, as the minus £3,000 was 'too big an amount'.

Gail's advice was 'please don't go for the minus', while teammate Andrew added: 'Don't go for the minus three, take the £5,000. You can do it.'

'I think my team are going to kill me but I'm going to have to go for the minus,' Emma said, provoking boos from the show's live audience.

'I just don't feel like I'm confident enough, and we've already lost one team member so I'm going to take the minus.'

Following the shock decision Twitter blasted Emma's decision, branding her a 'clueless b****' and adding that she 'is about as much use as t*** on a fish'.

One Twitter user wrote: 'Another weak minded pathetic loser on #thechase Emma, you are weak. Where are your morals?'

Nerves: The student confessed that she didn't feel confident enough to take the Chaser's offers of £5,000 or £38,000 and that she would decide to play it safe - also provoking boos from the live audience

Another added: 'Feel sorry for Andrew but deffo don't want Emma to win anything.'

A third asked: 'Is your buzzer broken Emma?'

Another added: 'Anybody who chooses the low offer on #TheChase deserves to be shot on the spot.'

Meanwhile, Emma's teammate Gail also raised a few eyebrows – after confessing she was on the show to research a death on a TV set.

As a fiction writer, Gail wanted to do some background investigation into 'what it's like to be a television programme because I have an idea where someone dies on set'.

Disappointed: Many Twitter users seemed to empathise with Emma's teammate Andrew, who managed to hang on until the final round before the team were sent home with nothing

Unfortunately for Gail, she was sent home empty-handed after taking on the Chaser.

Nevertheless, her surviving teammates Andrew and Emma also failed to take home any prize money – a result that was actually cheered by the audience at home.

'Glad Emma didn't get anything,' wrote one viewer on Twitter.

'That Emma girl doesn't deserve any money anyway,' said a second.

Another said: 'I don't care how smart you are but if you take a minus on The Chase don't ever talk to me. Always, and I mean always, gamble.'
