Jose Mourinho waiting to take over at Manchester United but current boss Louis van Gaal

ROB DRAPER: Louis van Gaal remained defiant after winning the FA Cup for Manchester United even as it was reported that he would be sacked next week with Jose Mourinho to take over on a £12 million-a-year deal. Van Gaal insisted that he had built the foundations of lasting success at United by delivering the first trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson retired after a three-year hiatus. But Van Gaal's finest moment was soured by reports that Mourinho would be taking over, though they remained unconfirmed by the club.

PALACE 1-2 UNITED (AET) ROB DRAPER: It may as well have been 1990 revisited. All it lacked was the replay. But the central themes were just as they were 26 years ago.

SAMI MOKBEL AT WEMBLEY: Alan Pardew struck Mark Clattenburg off his Christmas card list. Twice the referee blew up to award Crystal Palace free-kicks when playing on would have been more advantageous. Pardew let the first one slide after Connor Wickham's tussle with Chris Smalling, despite the striker having a sight of goal. But the Palace boss couldn't hide his fury when Clattenburg awarded a free-kick despite Joel Ward showing Marcos Rojo a clean pair of heels.
