Ginger Zee breaks down in tears after suffering back injury which may prevent her competing in Dancing with the Stars finale

She's set to face off against Nyle DiMarco and Paige VanZant - with partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy - for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy in the Dancing with the Stars season finale, beginning on Monday.

But ABC News has reported that Ginger Zee has suffered a pelvic injury that has been causing her back spasms so bad they could prevent her from competing.

The 35-year-old - who could be seen crying in pain in a preview for the upcoming episode - had continued rehearsing despite feeling a 'lower back spasm' that 'takes your breath away.'

The Good Morning America meteorologist had injured her pelvis earlier that week as she was rehearsing for a contemporary routine with her partner Val.

'By Wednesday, I went to see a physical therapist for the show, Gina [Minchella], and she said my pelvis was forward and an inch off,' Ginger explained to ABC News.

She added: 'I came back the next day, and [my pelvis] was backward and an inch the other way. My pelvis was just moving all over.'

The mother-of-one also noted: 'My pelvis is very loose and unstable...because I just had a baby.'

She and her husband Ben Aaron welcomed their first child together - son Adrian Benjamin - this past December.

In a preview for the upcoming episode Ginger could be seen in pain as partner Val tried to help her during rehearsal, and then in tears as she went to physical therapy.

However, she explained that she was not just crying from the pain but because she 'was more fearful and more frustrated because at this point in the competition every single minute counts.'

Ginger added that 'especially for a non-dancer repetition is everything. It gives you confidence...and without the ability to do that, it's scary.'

And Gina, the show's therapist, reported that Ginger was diagnosed with sacral instability and lumbar or lower back sprain.

Bad timing: Speaking with ABC News, Ginger explained that she knew this was a possibility as she healed after giving birth to her son this past December, but shared that 'it's just unfortunate that it came at this time'

She explained that 'it can happen to any person,' noting that 'it happens a lot to women because our hormones play a huge role in the ligaments in our pelvis.'

'For someone who is dancing with extreme conditions from flips to lifts and one-legged turns and all that, this kind of thing can happen a lot faster,' she shared.

Ginger shared that despite the pain and the injury she still intends to compete on Monday, as 'it's not like I'm taking a risk that I'm going to injure my back for the rest of my life.'

She shared how 'grateful' she's been following her C-section that her body has gotten back into the shape that it has.

'I knew I had to get my core strength back and do everything that we were supposed to do,' Ginger continued, adding: 'I knew that this was a possibility. It's just unfortunate that it came at this time.'

The two-night finale of season 22 of Dancing with the Stars begins Monday at 8pm on ABC.
