'I looked up and he was watching me': Ryan Gosling laughs about how his The Nice Guys co-star Russell Crowe caught him with his pants down on set

From his impressive resume of films that includes the tear-jerking romance The Notebook to the political thriller The Ides Of March, Ryan Gosling hasn't been able to flex his comedic muscle much.

But his new film with Australian actor Russell Crowe has shown the heartthrob in a different light, throwing himself rather literally into slapstick for The Nice Guys.

Turning up to set early one day, the hunky 35-year-old told The Daily Telegraph of a toilet scene that ended up introducing physical humour into the film, as well as breaking the ice for the pair.

'I looked up and he was watching me': Ryan Gosling said he was 'nervous' ahead of filming with Russell Crowe, but the ice was broken when the Australian actor caught Ryan with his pants down on set

'I was nervous. I didn’t know Russell very well at the time and I didn’t know if he was going to be okay with the film taking that direction,' he said.

Ryan was seated in a toilet cubicle, pants around his ankles and with a newspaper on his lap, before he caught a whiff of cigarette smoke.

'I looked up and Russell was watching me,' he laughed.

Changing direction: Ryan, 35, said he saw a big opportunity for physical comedy in the film but that is hadn't been written into the script

'He said: "You know, if you kick the door with your other foot, it will bounce back further".'

From there, Ryan knew 'this was going to be fun' and the pair's friendship has since blossomed into a full-blown bromance.

The pair, whose on-screen chemistry has been praised by critics, were in a jovial mood attending the UK premiere with Russell playfully hiding behind the heartthrob while clutching Ryan's arms.

The Nice Guys has won rave reviews across the world and is expected to do well commercially too, with projected takings of around $10 million on its opening weekend in the US.

In the film, Russell plays a contract killer to Ryan's private investigator, with the pair working together to solve the mysterious disappearance of a porn star in 1970s Los Angeles.

Filming for the movie began back in late 2014 in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia, and additional filming took place in Los Angeles.
