Hull FC 28-16 Hull KR: Derby win moves Black and Whites top of the Super League

Hull FC moved to the top of Super League in ideal fashion with a 28-16 win over arch rivals Hull KR at St James' Park.

The 228th Hull derby brought down the curtain on Magic Weekend and the Black and Whites continued their sensational form since coming from 20-0 down to beat Rovers at Craven Park on Good Friday.

Hull had seen fellow leaders Warrington and Catalans beaten despite taking commanding leads and that would have been at the back of their minds after tries from Mahe Fonua and Curtis Naughton either side of Shaun Lunt's yellow card.

Lunt returned from the sin bin to get Rovers back in it and Terry Campese added two penalties to his conversion either side of half-time to bring the Robins level at 10-10.

Former Hull player Graeme Horne put Rovers ahead for the first time but the Black and Whites were in control again following tries from Fonua and Jamie Shaul.

Mark Minichiello's converted try completed a fourth successive derby victory for Hull, the longest winning run in the fixture in the Super League era.

Hull came into the Newcastle showpiece full of confidence on the back of nine wins out of 10 and it showed in the sixth minute when Marc Sneyd sent a brilliant cross-field kick in the direction of Fonua, who got up above the returning Campese to claim the ball and touch down.

Rovers' hopes of getting back into the contest were hampered by a series of handling errors and the frustration became too much for Maurice Blair, who sparked a melee with a dangerous tackle on Sneyd.

Lunt was then sin-binned for a spear tackle on Liam Watts and Hull made the Robins pay almost immediately as they quickly moved the ball out to the right where Naughton squeezed over in the corner.

Rovers saw out the rest of the 10-minute period without any further damage and Danny Houghton, making his 250th Hull FC appearance, gave them a platform to attack by kicking out on the full.

And Lunt made Houghton pay the ultimate price by dummying his way over from acting half to atone for his earlier indiscretion and get the Robins on the board.

Campese converted to make it 10-6 and he closed the gap to two points with a penalty in the final seconds of the half after he was on the receiving end of a shoulder charge by Danny Washbrook.

Another Campese penalty after Sneyd dropped the restart and Frank Pritchard was penalised for holding down Adam Walker drew Rovers level and they continued to benefit from Hull indiscipline.

The Robins turned down an opportunity to go for goal again after a ball steal and that proved to be the correct decision as Horne ran a good line to take Albert Kelly's pass and go through a big hole in the Hull defence to score.

James Green made a mess of the restart and that began a period of Hull pressure which ended with Fonua taking a smart pass from Gareth Ellis and crashing over.

The momentum was with the Airlie Birds again and they were back in front when Shaul finished off a fine move that Carlos Tuimavave launched with a terrific long pass.

Tuimavave laid on the next try for the powerful Minichiello with a flat pass and that proved to be the final score as Hull took advantage of slip-ups to move two points clear at the top of the table.
